Let’s Build Things Right

Just for grins, I thought about spelling right, write, which would be wrong. Because I have a horible time with spelling, especially homophones (used to be homonym in my youth). Ironically, rite, wright, right and write are especially easy to get wrong as they are a group of 4. Most are groups of 2 or 3. Naturally they all have similar spelling. The English language would suddenly become easier if they were all spelled the same. Much better if true for all homophones.

However, instead, someone way back when decided to complicate my spelling life and came up with 4 spellings, each with its own meaning(s).

Now why am I speaking of spelling when my intention is to speak on fridges and washers. Well, I guess there is oddly a similarity. I promise.

In 1972, a long time ago, before the age of personnal computers, I purchased a 14 cubic foot coldspot fridge that, as far as I know still works. About 2005, I made a mistake. I wanted a bigger, better fridge…with an ice dispenser. It barely outlasted its 1 yr warrentee. I had it repaired. It broke again.

I bought another. It lasted 2 years and broke. Anyone notice a pattern here? Is there something wrong that they they can’t build them right?

When our washer broke, we bought another. Now that was a bad idea. I should have had the other one repaired. It was just a belt. I don’t have any memory of the old one dancing around the kitchen during the spin cycle. Thought about figuring a way to nail the new thing to floor.

The problem was, it works just the way it is supposed to. I can’t expect them to fix it on warrantee. It is simply a design defect. They didn’t design it right.

Guess I’ll be forced to buy a front loader. All the top loaders seem to like to dance. It is the result of an effort to decrease water usage. Well, I guess I could go back to the old wash tubs. It is just the two of us. It isn’t that hard. Fortunately, I still have a good gas dryer. If it breaks, I will get it fixed. I really might not like a new one.

Now. As for the new fridges. They have 3 things wrong. The old ones used a grate on the back of the unit as a condenser. No moving parts and easy to get at. The old ones used simple mechanical timers, which were simple, realiable, inexpensive and easy to replace. Modern ones use computers, complex, expesive, difficult and nearly impossibie to get to. You’d think such parts would have an easy access panel.

Then there is the coup de grace. Instead of using a heating element for defrosting, they use lights, which must be replaced on a regular basis. With us, it was about yearly.

Now, here’s the connection I promised you between the spelling and engineering. In general, people do expect me, an amateur, to get it right, though, I must admit I am prone to mess up now and then. These characters, engineers go to college four years and they are paid a bunch to get it right. They don’t and they still get paid.

As a short word in the defense of the engineers. They are under a lot of pressure to go green. (you know, Environmental, Social, Governmental, ESG)

You see, just as they decided to make English more difficilt, they have also decided to make appliances more difficult.

Okay. It is a stretch, a big one. Stll you get my point.

Incidentally, I wonder if it ever comes up in board rooms that they can make more profit off units that they can advertise as computer controlled instead of the old mechanical ones.

Surviving?

It would appear that our requirements for surviving have new priorities. When I awoke, I opened my little flip phone. Quickly I had an update on time and date. In addition, I realized it was Thursday, time to put out the trash.

While I was outside, I decided to take a couple of pictures. Soon after retuning, I received a text message. I could have done without that reminder for my dentist appointment. No. really I could have. I have a reminder on my phone. It will provide me with an audible alarm the day before.

I figure that we now have a new priority to survive. I have listed but a few things that makes my cell phone an important part of our lives.

Am I wrong? I mean what would happen without our cell phones. How can I do my math. I no longer have any other form of calculator. If if want to find the sum, I just pull out my trusty phone. Who needs to settle for 2 or even 3 places for pi anymore. I can make my scientific calculations to 8 places, maybe more. I can’t remember.

So, as the doomsday preper prepares, he might want to pack away a cell phone and a spare. It might be handy to figure out where he is… that is if the GPS system survives. Who knows, it might even come in handy for keeping in contact with others.

Solutions for Shooting Deaths

The Tennessee Dems think they have a solution to decrease the deaths by shooting in the state. Oddly it is primarily the one county in which they just almost totally rule where most of the killings occur. [Avg about 1 per day]

That does not speak well for their ideas. Maybe those in Memphis should pay more attention to the areas where the killing is not so prominent.

Then, of course they can’t do that no matter how many die. They would have to admit they have been wrong all these years and they are are going to make sure to dig their heels in good to prevent that.

The Door

In my book, “The Secret of the Ring, ” I write about how amazing doors are. Few ever think about them. We build walls about us to keep us safe.

Then, of course, the simplest way to get through the wall is by going through a door. I think life would be more difficult if we had walls and no doors.

And so it is that we build walls for shelter from animals, thieves and weather. However, without the doors, we might not be able to enter or exit.

I am not an expert on doors, but I know outside doors should have some basic requirements. We should be able to secure, or lock it. Depending on the neighborhood, we may want it to be strong and difficult to enter without the key. We might even want bars on it.

Oddly some folks like windows in the door. That sort of confuses me. After all, glass is easily broken. Also, it doesn’t provide much privacy.

When younger, I was told to remember to close the door. In some cases it was to keep the flies and insects out. In other cases, it was to keep the warmth in. In still other cases, we left the doors wide open to let fresh air in.

Much is said about doors and windows in literature. Certainly, most of us have heard that when God closes a door, then, somewhere He opens a window.

I suppose in a way, it implies that we can go in and out windows too. That would be particularly true when escaping fire.

However, homes are not the only thing to have doors. Barns, storage sheds, planes all have doors. So do ships but when I was in the Marines, I was encouraged to call them hatches. In many cases, such doors are designed more for keeping things in.

To be sure, life would be more difficult without doors…or gates.

One piece of advice, especially about car doors. I was trying to close the car door for my wife as she pulled it firmly closed. That hurt.

Apparently, that is one thing those engineers got right. As much pain as it caused, there was no permanent problem.

Word to the wise. Don’t get your fingers between the door and the car. It was close to half an hour before the feeling returned to my fingers.

Would you believe she had the nerve to laugh about it.

Watch out for those doors or hatches, or windows or whatever you call them.

As an aside. The warning given to Scott in my my book…”Never open a door until you know who is on the other side.”

Read (past tense read pronounced as the color red) the Book

Saw the movie. As usual the book was better. I don’t have any inclination at all to see the remake of Dune.

With all the ‘going woke stuff’ Hollywood stuffs in their work these days, I can’t imagine the remake being nearly as good as the original.

Regardless, I see no point to doing the research. I think I would rather watch reruns of NCIS.

Auto Air-bags

History has proven them dangerous and not effective. Less injuries and deaths before them. It would be far better to build better stronger bumpers.

Already the lawyers are out suing the who make the air-bags and, of course they increased the cost of cars and insurance. I would say the only ones benefiting from them are those that make them but that isn’t true. It would seem the lawyers who really get the biggest advantage. Then again, isn’t that the way with everything? I am sure those trial lawyers just can’t wait to start suing the self-driving cars.

Wait a minute. They have all ready had a few court cases. Before it’s all over, they might put a stop to Self-driving automobiles before they get a real start. Them lawyers don’t care about much besides lining their pockets.

Change is not Always Good.

Nikki Haley says she wants change. That scares me. Last time I heard someone talking change was Obama. Look how he changed things. Ever since, whenever I hear the word, my ears go up in fear. Just what does Nikki mean when she says change. Scary when she never said what changes she wants.

It’s an Imperfect World

On the 6th day God looked at all He made and saw that it was good. Then, apparently not long after, Satan tempted Eve; Eve tempted Adam; Adam sinned, and it all changed. We, all of us have become astranged with God. God has begun working this out at the cross. However, the world is still far from perfect.

Satan is still the prince of the air. He is still going about the earth as a roaring lion, devouring those that he can. Pain, agony, death is still among us. Indeed, even within the best Christian person, evil thoughts linger. With prayer, we have to fight such things off daily, even by the hour.

If not for the grace of God, it would be far worse. If he simply took his hand away, this earth would become far worse, not only for mankind, but also for every living thing.

The liberals speak of man as destoying this planet, by polution, by destroying forests, by ruining the rivers, lakes and seas. In a way, it’s true. In a way, it is even Biblical. Everywhere man goes, he leaves his mark. It is undeniable. And so it will be until Jesus returns.

Ultimately, God will destroy it because of the evil of man. Then, He will build another, without sin, without evil. Best of all, there will be no death and the pain it envokes.

Until that time, sorry. The death and pain and the sorrow will linger. The tears will remain. It is the result of evil.

Ironically, some have suggested that the solution is more evil. Some even suggest we should kill, of all, the most innocent before they breath their first. Some suggest an evil form of government that denys the very presence of the vary one who can save it. Some individuals have claimed they have the answers, while all the time taking every dime you have. For sure, participating in the worst kind of evil.

Many survivorlists think the answer is isolation and preparation. I have news for them. Being human, the pain will follow. There is no running from it. Satan will follow, all the time, nipping at your hills.

I don’t pretend to have all the solutions. I don’t. I do know one thing. Adopting communism won’t work. It denys God. It will turn the bad to disaster. Not only is it historic, it’s prophetic. It is the path that leads to pain, suffering, and, eventually, death.

The Well Trained Staff

We had gone to Huey’s on Goodman in Southaven. We had the shrimp and fries. When they first arrived, we could warm our hands from the heat coming off of our dinner. The waiter cautioned us. It was a needless gesture. I had burnt my tongue on the food there before. Still, it was a good idea. I mean McDonald’s did get sued over the hot coffee.

When I had just taken my last bite and I still had a full mouth, the waiter asked if we wanted a Diet Coke to take home. Now that is how you tell a well trained waiter. I know the man was off to the side waiting for me to have too much food in my mouth to reply and then, in that instant, he jumped out and asked me that question.

They practice that, you know. It is a well honed ability and it does not come natural.

Well, of course the food was good and the last bite of fries were still warm. I paid the bill and left a tip. I would have left more, but as I have said so many times before, we are basically living off Social Security. He understood. I would have explained but he knew us and he has heard the explanation before.

Now. If I could just figure out how they make those fries so good and hot.

As an aside, you want to wait for your food, go to McDonald’s. On the other hand, you will rarely do much waiting at Huey’s unless they are really busy. I suspect, if they maid Big Macs, it would not take them 15 minutes to get it to you.

Turn Around, There’s a Cliff Ahead!

I didn’t get all the details as I was distracted at the time. However, near as I can tell, the Disney company is starting to have problems. I would guess their movies are not doing well. I would guess they have had a drop off in park attendance. Maybe they are having trouble selling those little toys associated with the movies.

It is, as I said, a guess. I am not a business genius, but I would suspect they have what we in computers the dumb flip-flop stuck in the on condition.

They need not panic yet, though it would appear they just might be near the precipice.

My advice is simple. When you discover that you are going the wrong way, turn around and go back where you came from. They might improve things when they can tell the difference between boys and girls. They just might start improving things by going back to a true family centered corporation, sorta the way Walt Disney originally intended.

Christians, have a word for this. Repent. That is to say realize that what you are doing is wrong, stop, turn around and go back in the other direction.

Oh yes. One more thing! Bring prces back down, and I mean a bunch. I know Disney deals in fantasy land, but the rest of us must keep our feet solid on dirt, or at least most of us. Disney has done raised the price well beyond what most of us can afford.

Remember, Disneyland is an option. Food, shelter and gas are necessary.
