Good News

For those interested. I just found out that one of the thorns in Trump’s side has just been shot down. Come January, Liz from Wyoming will be looking for a new job. Invariable, she will find one in among the news establishment. She will be well rewarded for becoming a never Trumper. She might want to remember, though, all liars do get their just wages in the end.

Tis a shame we cannot arrange an immediate result. Unfortunately, we do need to wait for November to make it final. Then we have to wait till January to make it legal.

Either way, she got the message, though she is not likely to take the hint from her constituents.

I Didn’t Kill That Fish

This evening, the wife and I headed out for McDonald’s. She ordered a cheeseburger meal, and I ordered a fish sandwich meal. Hers was ketchup and mustard only. She does not like onions or pickles.

To be sure, I did not kill a fish and my wife didn’t kill the cow. Yet, somewhere along the line, a fish died so I could survive another day. Also, at some point, a cow was killed so my wife could enjoy her hamburger. It’s just the way it is for us omnivorous types. There is no telling how many fish, cows, pigs and such have died over the years so that I could survive.

It does somewhat encourage me to give up eating meat, but I doubt that I would survive long as a vegetarian. It was the way I was raised, and I pretty much want some kind of meat, fish or poultry at each meal. Yet, I still feel very badly that in order for me to survive, animals must die.

It wasn’t always that way, or at least that’s what most Bible scholars tell us. In the Garden of Eden, before Adam ate the forbidden fruit, the first couple ate veggies, fruits and nuts. Moreover, it was all they needed. In fact, nothing was mentioned about the eating of meat until after the flood. At that point, God explicitly gave us permission to eat meat, though He did not command it.

Then, from time to time, God gave explicit instructions to eat meat. I guess the first time was the night of the Passover. God, via Moses told the Israelites to eat the Passover sacrifice. Then, later, God instructed them to eat portions of the sacrifices. I can only assume it is okay with Him if I eat meat, as long as I don’t eat or drink the blood.

This was farther confirmed when Jesus prepared breakfast for the decuples made primarily of fish. It was one of those, what I call, incidental parts of the Bible. It is not everyone who can claim having a meal prepared by Jesus. I doubt anyone could have cooked it better.

I have heard a number of people claim that life without meat is healthier. There is no doubt that my doctor would prefer I eat less meat, especially fried. I don’t know God’s point of view on fried food. As near as I can tell, he only addressed meat that was boiled or roasted.

Nonetheless, I guess I do eat too much meat. One good side effect of decreasing my meat intake is that less animals would have to die. One thing that would really help is a lot of fresh hot bread. I like it so much that I can eat it without butter. Sorry bakeries, no matter what you do, you just can’t duplicate right out of the over freshness.

I have read the Bible completely many times, not to brag, but to let you know, I am completely familiar with it. Perhaps one of the more difficult parts for me are the descriptions of the sacrifices of the animals. I am something of an animal lover and I had some problems with all the sacrifices. Many were killed and sacrificed. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just read the first 5 books of the Bible.

Then, when you look at Kings and Chronicles, you can see many more examples. To me, it is a horrible thing that so many animals are killed for a sacrifice. Yet, God tells us in the first book of the Bible, there is no remission of sin without the shedding of blood.

It is the reason God accepted Able’s sacrifice and not Cain’s. Cain offered a sacrifice of grain and fruit. It would not pay for sins.

It sure would be nice if I could grow an acre or so of wheat and turn it over to God and all my sins would be paid for. No blood would have to be shed and no animals would have had to die.

However, it does not work that way. In fact, even the blood of the animals was not sufficient. At best, all they did was point to the one whose blood was sufficient. I hate it so much that Jesus had to die in order to save me. His life, His blood is infinitely more valuable all the animals before him. It goes without saying, His life is infinitely more valuable than mine. Yet he chose to lay down His for mine.

And so it is, I did not kill the fish I ate. I did not kill the Savior who gave his life for me. But it was for me they died, so that I might live. The fish gave me life for a day. Jesus died so that he could give me life forever. I guess, for that alone, I owe him everything.

Oh. And by the way. Jesus also provides the fish I eat and even the air I breath. Maybe I need to remember to thank him for that too. Is it too much to pause a few seconds before I eat to express my thanks verbally.

The Power of a Mirror

When I was in the Marines, they had full length mirrors in each barracks. We were strongly encouraged to examine our reflection carefully before leaving the barracks. You see, mirrors have a special power. If there is a flaw in our appearance, we were able to see it and correct it before going out in public.

Looking back on it, I can see there is some wisdom in the idea. Actually, when you come right down to it, a look into a mirror before we go anywhere just might save us a little embarrassment.

God tells us that his law is like a mirror. When we look at ourselves in the law as a mirror we see our faults. Many see ourselves as not so bad. Yet, a moment in the full length view of the law reveals the truth. The very best of us appear horrible in the mirror of the law.

However, God has made provisions for all of us. Accept Jesus as your savior and God will look at you through His Son. He will not see so much as the smallest infraction of His law. It will be as if we are perfect.

The first step in salvation is looking at the reflection of ourselves in the mirror of God’s law so that we get an idea of how God sees us. If we face Him without doing so, embarrassment is the least of our concerns.

Karma ?

If you want to get on my bad side, use the word, “karma” around me. First, and most importantly, it does not exist. It is a fictitious term invented by a man who thought it sounded nice. Moreover, it is a counterfeit of something very real, God’s law.

God holds us responsible for every time we disobey His law. I assure you, you will not pay for what you do now in your next life. Again, reincarnation is an invention made up by a man. It does not exist. The Bible tells us that it is appointed for men once to die.

When a person uses the man-made term, he gives the word credence and misleads others. This is true regardless of whether or not he means to.

It is a way for Satan to sneak his term into society through the side window. By making the term commonplace, it makes it seem legitimate, that is to say, a basis for other lies.

It is one of Satan’s common methods; to replace God’s truth with a fabrication that seems similar.

Surprise, Not All Stove Are Hot

It is something, likely, as old as stoves. Most folks quickly learn not to touch hot stoves.

Actually, it is not so important today as it was a couple of centuries ago when ole Ben first started building stoves. Generally speaking, when someone would touch a hot stove, they were not apt to repeat it.

Actually, I suspect it went back even farther than that. Before there were stoves, there were fireplaces. Before fireplaces campfires, or their equivalent.

I even heard a tale of one of the big wigs at Levi learning not to kneel next to campfires…first time. It was then that they decided to remove one or two of the rivets from the area just below the fly of their famous canvas trousers.

The one thing brought away from the first experience was the probability of pain, sometimes a little embarrassment too. However, here’s the news. Not all stoves are hot. Not all rivets are hot. It just is that once exposed to these experiences we mostly come away thinking they are, or at least can be. It is referred to as inductive reasoning. Because the first stove we touch is hot, we assume all stoves are hot.

What if the reverse is true. What if the first stove you touch is ambient temperature? Do we then assume that all stoves are cool to the touch. If we do this, we expose ourselves to many painful experiences. This is called inductive reasoning.

While it is useful, it can easily lead to errors. For instance, if we see a brown Labrador retriever, it would be wrong to assume that all dogs are brown and weigh eighty pounds. Indeed, it would be wrong to assume that all Labs are brown. Oddly there are some that are black.

On the other hand, suppose we touch a hundred cool stoves. Can we then assume are stoves are cool? If we see a hundred brown Labs, are we to assume that all labs are brown.

You see, even though we see a large number of examples, we cannot truly assume anything.

Until we see a large enough number of examples, we cannot positively say that we know all labs are brown and that all stoves are cool. Even when working with large numbers, inductive reasoning can lead us astray.

I wish that kids in the eighth grade were required to spend a few hours learning about inductive and deductive reasoning. I am convinced the concept is extremely important in so many parts of life.

Let’s take for instance, the woman that is robbed by an African American. Is it right for her to be afraid of all African Americans? Of course, not. Yet, it may take her years to get over the experience. Our fears are not always founded on good logic. Indeed, her fear might keep her from many good friendships.

The somewhat opposite of inductive reasoning is deductive reasoning. In deductive reasoning, we draw conclusions from many, perhaps exhaustive numbers of examples. It is best that these examples are at random. It is the way that medical research is done. I suppose we can say that statistics and deductive reasoning are interrelated. The more the examples and the more random, the more accurate will be the stats deductive reasoning that depends on the stats.

If we have a random selection of a million dogs, it is likely that only a few will be Labs and we will likely see a few black dogs, white dogs and even a few multi-color dogs. Therefore, we can have a more accurate idea of the coloring of dogs. If we take a random measurement of a million stoves, we might actually find that only 30% are hot enough to cause pain, or even discomfort. (only a wild guess, not am actual statistic)

I’m not going to try to create an equivalent example with the thievery. It’s far too complex and there are too many ways it can go wrong with my imaginary statistics. Moreover, I am not going to suggest that a woman should get robbed a million times. Two or three maybe, but no more. Still, the principles remain firm. With a larger number of examples, we would be able to draw more accurate deductions.

However, we need to be careful about drawing snap conclusions. When we go from the millions of examples and try to derive a single situation from millions of examples, we can still be wrong. For instance, if I may. It would not indicate that a thief is of any ethnicity, and it would be wrong to make any such suggestion.

Yet, every day, I see some people blame Black men because of individual as well as vast statistical data. Those methods just don’t work. And, by the way, the methods don’t work on Caucasian policemen, again, regardless of past inductive or deductive reasoning. You cannot convict a policeman based on past experience just as the woman cannot convict based on past thieves.

Perhaps the most horrible example of inductive reasoning is when the person says, “Single parent families are just as good as two-parent families.” Then they go about calling out two, three or four examples of good kids brough up by single parents. That logic has two holes. First, it is based on a very small count of examples. Second, there is the probability that, if there is a second parent, the child would likely have turned out better. The statistics back it up. We are talking millions of examples not just two or three.

On the other side of the coin, I see people say that a particular person turned out good or bad because of his parent(s). The stats prove that some good kids come from bad or broken homes and bad kids come from homes with good parents.

In this case, the inductive logic gets us nowhere and the deductive logic only shows trends. The trend shows overwhelmingly that two parent homes are better. But logic tells us that it is only true if they are good parents. Abusive and or alcoholic parents rarely qualify as good parents. Yet, again, some good kids come from homes with abusive parents. Sorry. I have no explanation for that. I’m not sure there is one.

For those who are not truly familiar with the terms inductive and deductive reasoning, may I suggest you take an hour or two and look into it on the net. Most will find it far more complex than most of us realize. For instance, one thing that must accurately be determined in inductive reasoning is an accurate correlation. For instance, that dance by that Voo-do doctor likely has nothing to do with that solar eclipse. On the other hand, all that rain I dumped on my lawn the other day likely had nothing to do with the thunderstorm we got the next day, though it did seem a little coincidental. If we collected enough data, it is likely to be proved that the one thing had nothing to do with the other.

On the Peripheral of Baseball

I took my wife out to eat tonight at one of her favorites, Huey’s. Right after we ordered, she asked if I knew who Vin Scully is. Eventually she called to my attention the banner on the big TV screen behind me, “Remembering Vin Scully.

Of course I remember him. Being raised in Orange County, California, I listened to a great many of his broadcast of Dodgers games. Of course I never met him, yet he seemed to be a friend.

Naturally, one can say he was old. It was expected. Yet he is one that I would have preferred to hang around for a few more decades.

Of course, the banner was not an outright proclamation but it is the way the news speaks of those who are no longer with us. So I pulled out my cell phone and did something I never used it for before. I pulled up Google and then after entering just the letter v, his name popped up. It sort-of told me 2 things. Vin Scully was high the news for the day and he had a huge following.

Then, almost instantly after I tapped the top most listing, I saw the news story. I knew it would be there, yet I hoped it wasn’t.

As I said, I didn’t really know him but for the few hours each day during the season. However, as near as I can tell, he was a man I would have liked to know well.

He was an announcer, not one of the players. He was only on the periphery of the game. Yet, he truly contributed so much to baseball and all of us who enjoyed the game and couldn’t afford to go.

He will be missed. He is already missed.

A Big Laugh

As mentioned in an earlier post, I’m not much of a comedian. My biggest laughs generally aren’t planned.

Such was the case this afternoon when I ordered a Whopper meal. The woman behind the counter suggested a Big Mac instead.

Believe it or not, I wondered just why the correction; this while I looked right at the menu.

I really enjoy when I can provide a real laugh for someone, especially for the woman who likely was looking forward to a long hard day. I just wish I could bring such effective laughter to to folks by design. Then again, I guess the error is what causes the humor.

At any rate, I was comforted by being told that I was not the first to misspeak. In other words I was not the first to seek a Whopper at a McDonald’s. I would suspect there have been a few who sought Big Macs at Burger King.

As for me, I guess what I really need is a new brain.

Almost Paradise

As I considered the title to this post, I realized I came up with something of a good book title. At least, it seemed that way to me. Now, I need is a good book to go with it. Come to think of it, maybe someone did already. It would be a shame if someone else beat me to it.

The point is that the place I moved to in 1977 was really nice and had been for decades. It was almost paradise, though there were a few problems.

Some of the roads were spread with pot holes. My poor little car had a real problem with the little trailer bouncing around behind us. There were but a small smattering of places to eat and we could find but 1 doctor office, 1 dentist and one pharmacy. The closest hospital was 15 or 16 miles away.

However, the schools were nice and there weren’t many police. Wasn’t much need for them. It truly was almost paradise.

In this world there are problems with paradises. Southern California, before 1950 was an almost paradise. Now, look at it. I won’t go through the list of problems there now. Everyone knows. The desire to live in paradise has destroyed it. Now the U-hauls are leaving and the people are going to other paradises; as Texas, Florida, etc.

in all likelihood, those paradises will be spoiled too. It almost always happens. Unfortunately, paradises draw the unsavory element as well as the exemplary.

It’s happened and is happening where I live. If I possible, I’d leave as soon as i could. If there were an army of police, it would not be enough. The undesirable element is drifting south from Memphis. It does say something about Memphis. No one wants to leave a good place for a worse one.

We now have doctors hospitals dentists, the whole works. Even the streets are smooth. However, it seems that every fourth car I see nowadays has Shelby County plates.

Don’t actually have too much of an objection if they want to spend Tennessee dollars in Mississippi, but they bring their driving habits too. Not only that but they bring their crime, mostly drugs, and robbery too. A couple of years ago, I posted a story about a break in in my house. Dumb thief! One look at my little 900 square foot house and he’d have known I don’t have anything.

The area right across the state line had two big thriving malls and the area around it had a multitude of stores, restaurants and businesses. The malls are now all but closed and the parking lots are all baren.

Needless to say, the value of my little house has skyrocketed. Every time Memphis comes up with a bad idea my property value goes up.

The problem is that as they leave what used to be a near paradise, they bring their stupid ideas with them, and ruin our neighborhoods.

It is not just a local problem. It won’t be long that the illegal aliens will bring their ways to our nation and destroy our national paradise.

This reminds me of a passage in the Bible in which it says that murderers, thieves, liars, adulterers, etc, etc, and so forth will never go to heaven (paradise).

At the time I first read it, I did not see the full significance as I do now. You see, any place where such people are allowed would not be paradise. It would not be long before even the steets of heaven would be ruined. When the corrupt are denied access, about anywhere would be great. Then, with Jesus there too, it will be perfect.

If you would like to go there, you need a reservation. The only way to get the reservation is to accept Jesus as your savior. Then, he will cleanse you. Those not born again are not cleansed. They will not enter paradise. They will only see eternal punishment.

if you think about it, it makes sense. Who wants a paradise full of corruption and the corrupt. Certainly, God doesn’t.

Now if I could just get all these liberals to go back to Memphis where they belong!!

Robo-umps Inevitable?

Maybe. Likely. My guess is that it will become common within the decade.

My logic is that it’s all about the dollar, or more accurately, the thousands of dollars.

You see, we’re not talking Little League. Even in the early days of baseball, one call did not make that much difference. Nowadays, one bad call call can lead to the loss of tens of thousands of dollars.

One can argue that it all averages out. However, sometimes it doesn’t work that way. Can you imagine if it is the last call of last pitch of the World Series? We’re talking millions of dollars based on one call being right or wrong.

I would expect that the methods will go through changes and adjustments. I read it will be a slightly larger strike zone. That likely would increase the strikes and decrease the hits. In turn, that would reduce scoring, which might not be desirable.

i don’t know. It’s not really a guess. I’m just saying that the fans might not like it. There is simply no way to totally be sure of the results until they try it out live, perhaps in the pre season.

I do wonder how it’s gonna effect Las Vegas. I mean I do wonder. I suspect they’re already considering it, though. It will likely change things but just how is anyone’s guess.

Bottom line, it’s only important to those who hurl the ball and those who try to hit it. I guess to them it means the world. To me, not so much.

The Biggest Problem With the Marines

After 9 years in the Marines, it saddens me as I watch what happens to it. I’m sure that I’m not alone though I have yet to check around.

To be sure, it has gotten soft. If I went a day without getting hit during boot camp, it was a real oddity. OK. I admit it. It caused a little pain. In the end, I knew my drill instructor had my interest in mind. The pain only increased my chances of my survival, which also increased the chances for the marines around me. Being in the air wing, I never saw any real combat, but i was plenty close enough for me. I also met many who did see the combar. I drew the conclusion that, no matter the pain, better to learn in training.

Certainly, the advent of politically correct experiments haven’t helped. Well, they helped the politicians. When staying alive is the object, politics matter less than nothing. And one of the best ways to stay alive is by killing the enemy, as horrible as that may sound. When you keep him on the run, his abilities to kill you are greatly reduced.

Then, I ask, do we really need women in foxholes? Does it really improve our abilities to rain terror on the enemy? I know for sure 2 things about that. I would never willingly share a foxhole with a woman and no woman would ever want to share a foxhole with me.

I could certainly carry on just about forever on the subject, but the question is the biggest problem with the Marines. That’s simple. That’s obvious. The biggest problem with the entire Department of Defense is the commander in chief. No one person has done more damage to our military than Joe has.

My only question, is it stupidity on intentional. Likely, it is both. The problems with the likes of Joe giving the orders is that learning war tactics by experience is horribly expensive and there are no backspace keys. Mistakes are very permanent.
