Time Flies

Time flies, if you can, but it takes a keen eye.

Some may have difficulty making sense of the above sentence. If so, the hint is that “[You]” is the understood subject.

Maybe you can have some fun with your friends and the above sentence, which though it appears nonsense, is a proper, though useless sentence.

And by way, the sentence makes far more sense than some of the going green ideas out there.

Making Money the Legal Way

Every day lawyers make money the legal way. In the process, they cost well meaning honest people a ton and a half of money. Considering the weight of paper money, that’s a lot of cash.

They don’t have to win their cases in court. They sue for a million, settle for 200 thousand and the lawyers walk away with 80 thousand of it. This, of course all occurs within months, maybe weeks.

The sad thing is that many of the defendants have done nothing wrong. I wonder suspect no one is keeping any statistics. I suspect that those statistics would prove that most of the time the loser is our justice system.

Then, there are those situations where the defedants are guilty. In the recent case concerning Camp Lejeune, the lawyers seem to really be cleaning up.

I can’t help but wonder how much of our tax money is going into the hands of lawyers rather than victims. The attorneys advertise day and night. There must be a lot at stake. Otherwise, why advertise so much.

It is legal, completely. However, as veteran myself, it leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth that the lawyers would buy their executive jets off veterans like me. It is likely why lawyers are known as a necessary evil.

As an aside, think about it. The Congressmen are largely lawyers making laws to benefit lawyers. Unlike the Constitution, laws aren’t written in plain English. In order to understand laws, we need lawyers. By the way, sometimes the lawyers don’t understand them.

It’s no wonder lawyers live so well, unless they are honest and ethical.

Ironically, No Ch. 5

The 1st time I arrived in Memphis, actually NAS Memphis located in in the city of Millington just north of Memphis, the only TV station I could receive on my little 5 in. portable TV was ch. 5.

Now I can receive all the major channels but 5. I have no idea why. I’ve tried auto-scanning the channels dozens of times. Depending on the position of the amplified GE antenna, I get some channels some times and other channels other times. However, since removing cable, I have yet to see NBC or any of the other substations on ch 5.

My first thought was that it was some kind of conspiracy but how. Certainly, those who own the station want me to be able to watch their advertising. I mean, they don’t make money off the programs but rather the ads.

It brings to mind my CEO theory again. Has the CEO ever tried to receive ch 5 on an antenna? Does he, or she even care about us mass of poor people who don’t have cable. Maybe we have been written off, so to speak, because we have such little purchasing power.

It does somewhat make me wonder what they are trying to sell on ch 5. For that matter, what kind programming do they have.

The main point of this post however, is point out the problem with the TV. I can delete channels after a scan but I cannot add any. Try as I may, I have tried and tried. It would appear the designers of my TV have assumed two things that aren’t true. First, they believed that their work of wonder will find all channels. Second, they assumed that all transmitters are the same direction from my living room.

Nothing is further from the truth. I need to adjust the direction of the antenna for each channel for best reception. That means that no one scan will pick up all the stations.

In this case, no ch. 5 at all.

I wonder if the CEO of ch. 5 knows, or cares.

An afterthought: Channel 10, PBS came in crystal clear, no matter where I point the antenna. Most of the shopping networks come in good. I wonder about that. It means every time I do a scan, I need to manually delete all the garbage.

Growing Old

I write this for those who have not yet grown old. No matter what you might think it will be like, you’re wrong. It is no one thing but rather a collection of little things.

As you grow old, the first thing you will likely notice is that the person looking back at you has become a stranger. Fight as you might, your face changes, seemingly overnight. Yet, as you think it over, you will realize it was gradually, not sudden.

Perhaps, the most devastating birthday will be your 40th. This is when you will awake to the realization that you will never become president. Most will face the reality of never becoming rich and famous. I’d settle for rich.

On my 49th birthday, I never had surgery. Since, I have had a list as long as my arm. One indication of aging is when yoy sit around talking of hospital visits. We old folks are always trying to outdo the others about our trials and illnesses.

Closely associated with hospitalizations are the meds. At 40, the only meds I took were for my alergies. Now, before retiring for the night, I take 10, most reqireing scripts. I mentioned to a doctor that I feel as if I have my own drug store. He laughed and told me of a patient he had that received a transplant. He had shelves of meds, many very expensive.

I guess 65 is also another big transition for most of us. It’s when we start dealing with Social Security. Personally, my transition went well. The people were nice and very helpful.

I have heard of some real problems, though. My wife’s grandfather was born on an Indian reservation and he had a very difficult time proving he was born.

At 72, my hair is turning white and starting to thin. I can’t complain about that. Most men my age don’t have much hair at all. Look at what President Trump did to conceal his balding. On the other hand, the current occupier of The Oval Office had expensive hair transplants, only to lose most of it anyway.

One of the biggest giveaways that we are older is that we start losing friends, relatives and neighbors. I look around and I realize I have lost many acquaintances. I hear about this one having a heart attack or this one a stroke.

I have known a few who died from alkzheimers disease. I lost 2 brothers to brain cancer. It makes me wonder why I have been permitted to live this long.

One day, I needed to get down on the floor to do something. Next thing I knew, I couldn’t get up, regardless of my best efforts. I found it utterly ridiculous. It was something I just took for granted.

Nowadays, I am far more careful. Moreover, I suggest, anyone who is able, exercise by getting on the floor and standing 10 times a day. You must realize, being able to stand is important.

You might find this odd, but you should cough regularly. The muscles used for coughing are very important. If you’re unable to cough, you won’t be able to clear your lower respiratory system.

Getting old is learning to think of such things.

Sometimes, Bigger is Better

A tree fell in my back yard. I already had a 14 inch chainsaw, but it is old, dull and requires an extension cord. So, I went to Lowes and bought a battery powered Kobalt 40 V 14 in. model. I mean, if it’s Kobalt it has to be good.

From the start, I was disappointed. It took about 2 hours to put the chain on and adjust it. Moreover, as my wife said the chain looks more like something to hang around the neck than something designed for dealing with even small trees.

I guess I should have gotten an 18 inch model but I was only battling 6 inch limbs. At any rate, it took 5 minutes for the chain to get caught in one of the limbs.

When I put the old wore out saw to the task, it went right through it.

Then, once I freed the chain for the new saw. It took another hour to put it back on. For this I refer to the post I wrote on what I call the CEO principle. Clearly, the CEO has never used this saw. Leastways, I know he never installed the chain.

As an aside, the installation book can stand a couple of small corrections. First, it might help to explain that the kickback lever is a little difficult to actuate. I was afraid of breaking it.

Also, it might help to explain the chain installation better. Better yet, they could make it easier to install the thing.

I Knew it Had to Happen!

When they came out with battery powered push mowers, I knew the battery powered rider mower would be next. I even predicted it in one of my posts.

When I visited Lowes this afternoon, I noticed two zero turn machines that had electric mower trademarks on them.

I made a point to check them out on the way in. They had a sign on it that bragged 2 acres on a charge. I actually do have a decent sized yard, but it doesn’t get close to a 1/4 of an acre. Sadly, my yard just doesn’t justify the price tag.

Even so, considering my age, I was still tempted. Maybe I could use it to make money. I could advertise a green friendly way to keep your lawn well manicured. I wonder just how many lawns it would take to justify spending $5500.

Maybe one or two of my readers can figure a way to pretend I need a zero turn rider mower.

Maybe they will come out with a little lawn tractor mower soon. Maybe they will come out with one I can afford. In the meantime, I guess I will trudge behind the one I have. At least it’s electric. That will make those “going green” nuts happy.

Oh. And by the way. I won’t have to pay road tax to cut my grass.

Just Curious

Is there anyone on this planet that is unaware of the water problem that existed on and around Camp Lejeune?

if there is one, I’d like to know just what rock he’s hiding under.

I suppose I ought not complain. They are allowing me to watch old Hunter reruns free. Then again, their ads are wasted on me. Though I was in the Marines, i was never stationed east of Memphis.

Regardless, my guess is that there are a bunch of money hungry lawyers ready to get their share of the tort fortunes.

It does cause me to wonder just who they will villainize next. Those lawyers do need their jet planes and luxury yachts.

The Difference of Christianity from Religion

When a person puts their confidence in his good deeds, that’s religion.

When a person puts his confidence in Jesus Christ alone, that’s Christianity.

If you think your good deeds will help get you into heaven, just answer this question. Just when is it that you did something truly good from God’s perspective? What is it that you did that will outweigh all that you did that was not so good?

A Curiosity

There is a question of small significance based on the Bible and prophecy. Just why is it that the US is not mentioned in the Bible. It does seem to many that the Bible has left out half the world. Some might even suggest it is one of the more important parts.

Many have asked the question. Some have suggested answers. Personally, I don’t know. I do consider it something of a curiosity, though I would never let such a thing cause any doubts in the accuracy of God’s word.

As near as I can figure, what happens in terms of prophecy in the western hemisphere, is of little significance. Currently, that seems highly unlikely.

However, it would not take but a few days for that to change.

  1. A natural disaster. California, the Mid-south and many other places in Mexico and South America have serious fault lines. Just lately I found out there are faults under New York too, though not currently active. From time to time, I have been reminded that Yellowstone sets a top a huge volcano capable of destroying most of this country and send ashes worldwide. Such a thing just might help fulfill prophecies. I don’t know. As I say. I just observe.
  2. It might be war or a few terrorists. China, Iran and a few other countries would like American history to end. The Dems, on the other hand, seem to be inviting terrorists over an open border. A few well placed nuclear weapons would destroy our nation. Just look what 3 well placed planes did. Many take our national security for granted. They like the advantages of living here but they are not willing to help pay for it.
  3. Finally, there is the possibility of destruction from within. Those who say the Republicans are destroying democracy are tearing our Constitution asunder. Without the 10 amendments to protect us, the US will crumble.

Maybe none of this will happen. I don’t know. If any of it does, I hope I don’t live to see it. On the other hand, the more I observe, the more I believe it will be the third. With the dems such as they are, the Lord will not need to send natural disasters or even an enemy to destroy the nation he sees going very much astray. We will do a really great job of destroying ourselves.

Tattoos

When i was young, only men had tattoos. Women rarely had them. Now, it seems that women find it fashionable to disfigure themselves with ink as well.

Maybe you find me judgmental for the above statement and maybe I am. Mostly, though, it is an observation.

Before I continue, I believe I should make the disclaimer, I am not a profit. God has not revealed some special truth to me. However, I read the Bible and I observe.

The Bible says that people will take the mark of the beast and that nobody will be able to buy or sell without the mark of the beast.

If the mark of the beast is a tattoo, women would not have been willing to disfigure themselves decades ago. Nowadays, no problem. With one of those square bar codes, unique for each person a person could replace virtually all forms of identification.

The tattoos would, in theory fix many problems: ID theft, loss of documents (credit cards, driver’s license, military ID, SS card, etc.), loss of cash, etc. It would even do away with car keys. The person with the mark could simply hold out a hand to his car to gain access and then start his vehicle.

I am sure the list goes on and on. It would make the mark very attractive and very practical.

Understand. I am not saying that it is the way it will be. I am saying that such a system is far more acceptable today than yesterday. I am just as sure that it will become more acceptable with the passing of each day, year and decade.

Then again, I might be completely wrong. Regardless, I don’t think I am going to take any bar code tatts.

For my aside today, such a system would not only make it easier for the consumers but for big brother too. Every time you make a purchase or sell big brother will know. It is a world that the author of “1984” could not have imagined. On the other hand, it is just the world that Satan would love.
