Helping the Devil

I had the idea on this post, I guess about three days ago.  However, I am just now getting around to writing it.  Why?  I just don’t know how.  I wish I did.  I have prayed about it.  I prayed for help or even if I should write it.  I suspect that it will do little good.  Many will argue the existence of the devil in the first place.  Some will argue that they aren’t helping the devil when they are, while deep down in their heart they know better.

Let’s look at how the devil works.  It’s not new.  The Bible speaks of how he works, lies, deception, pride, the offering of short term gains.  By the way, those who help the devil use the same methods.  However, they also add bribes, terror, and, well, let’s just call it group think.  You fall outside the in crowd and your name is mud.  Your business goes bust.  Your cake decorating shop gets sued because you refuse to accept what the government calls marriage.  (God had the first say and He will have the last say on that subject.)

So.  Let’s give it just a little thought.  That time you told a lie about that politician.  You helped the devil.  That time you bribed that government official, you helped Satan in his deception.  That time you helped that dishonest person running for office, you helped evil to prosper.  When you go down and buy that lottery ticket, you helped Satan.

I guarantee every time a person goes into a gambling casino, the devil smiles.  Win or lose, the devil wins and society loses.

Of course, voting does not always occur at the polls.  When you encourage the defunding of the police, Satan is jumping for joy.  Every time a person goes through a store and takes all he can carry, guess what?  Satan wins, that is for the short term, and you are helping him.

It’s more than just repeating the lies of the devil.  It is also accepting them.  You say, “Of course Biden won the election.  Everyone knows it.”  Only you know it’s a deception from the dems and originated by the evil one himself, Satan.

I ask you.  Do you really believe that Old Joe is a better man for president than President Trump?  I mean, do you really down deep in your heart believe that lie, or do you just want to believe it?  On the other hand, there are those who don’t care.  All they want is the power, which is also, what Satan wants.

Ergo, you chose to believe the lie and as such, you are aiding and abetting the devil.  It’s not a matter of if you want to.  It is not a matter if you believe it.  It’s the simple fact that you are.

In the process, you helped to put hundreds, maybe thousands of innocent people in prison for January 6.  And you are helping those trying to put the one president that has done the most for this nation in over fifty years in prison.  Even more, he has done great things for God’s church, allowing them freedom of religion.  I don’t think Satan liked it when he fought for Christians to be exempt from paying for abortions.  I don’t think Satan liked those justices he put on the Supreme Court either.  Actually, the dems didn’t like any of that much either.

Actually, if you go down through the things that Satan is trying to do and what the dems are trying to do, there are many similarities.  Regardless of the motives, I am certain that Satan is very grateful for the help.

The lies, the bribes, and the threats, they all go toward his goals.  One day, Satan will answer.  I know.  I have read the last of the book.  Guess what.  He will not be alone.  His demons will be right there with him in that fire.  Also, those that have helped him will spend eternity paying for their lies and deceit.  Hell was not made for man but for the devil.  God does not want to send one man or woman there.  They will go of their own choice by rejecting the salvation provided by Jesus Christ.

Who Has the Better Offer

I am just a little confused. There are those who chose religion over Christianity. Why? Just who has the better offer? Is Buddhism better than eternal life with Jesus. Is there something the Hindus offer that is better than what is offered by Christ.

Besides this, who has any power to fulfill any promise. I mean, to the best of my knowledge, even the Buddhists admit that Buddha is no longer living. What can he do for you? What could he do for you if he were still alive?

Only Jesus has a real promise. Only He has the power to fulfill the promise. Only He will provide you with life that will last…forever.

Why chase the counterfeit when Jesus, the real one, the only one who can truly provide you with eternal life. He not only has the better offer. He has the only offer. The rest have empty promises, if they have promises at all.

As my aside, be careful. There are those who would like you to believe they represent Christ, that they are ambassadors of the one true God. If they teach anything other than what is in the Bible, they are frauds. If they seek money and fame, be very careful. If they stand in pride in what they have done, most likely they don’t represent God. Finally, if they teach that you must belong to their church for salvation, they teach a lie.

While believing in Jesus Christ is an absolute requirement for salvation, belief in any church, in any organization, or in any person other than Jesus, is idolatry. It will gain you nothing. Rituals will not gain you salvation, even baptism and the Lords supper. However, we as Christians we observe baptism and the Lord’s supper in obedience only after we accept Jesus as our savior. Jesus, himself instituted the sacraments. He told us to celebrate the Lord’s supper in remembrance of Him. As he ascended into heaven, he told us to preach the Gospel and to baptize.

It seems, Everybody’s Jumping

I’m sure that most of you, as with me, heard the expression, “If everyone jumps off a cliff, would you do it too.” It is a simple admonition to keep us from following the mistakes of others. Perhaps it was used a little too much as it did somewhat lose its effectiveness on many. Nonetheless, there is something to it. Just because others do things, that doesn’t make it the smart thing to do. Sometimes, the rush by others can be downright dumb.

Not to make a jump to another subject, but I frequently go up and down I-55 between Southaven and Hernando. As I do, I see this big sign on the side of a building. It made me wonder, just who are they? Just what do they do? Finally, I looked them up on the web. Mostly, it wasn’t that surprising. However, I’m going to leave their name out and what they do in this post. I see no point in disparaging them here.

The thing is that just as I was about to leave their web site, I saw their ESG (Environmental, Social and Governmental) statement. It is one of those things that is not required by law, but it would seem everyone is doing it. Everyone seems to be jumping off that cliff, despite all the admonition of their parents.

The Budweiser corporation jumped off that cliff and it almost drove them into bankruptcy. The Disney Corporation decided to make the jump and their stockholders are still smarting. I noticed some outfits are trying to straddle the fence, that is, they are making it look as if they are jumping without actually jumping. When I went into Firestone the other day to have my HHR worked on, they had a small, almost unnoticeable little statement on one of their advertising boards. It made me wonder what they would say if I asked them about it.

Why the sudden change? What happened that companies risk losing significant income just so they can suffer the income loss as with everyone else? Moreover, even worse, purposely, intentionally they are giving up market share. People are still drinking beer, just someone else’s. People are still buying clothes, just not from Target.

People have buying habits. When they change people they do business with, it tends to be permanent. If those people who used to drink Bud, decide some other brand is better, they just might not return. In other words, this stupidity might have long-term damage.

Well, it used to be, that is to say in times past, it was the duty and the purpose of corporate boards to make money for the owners of the company, that is to say, the shareholders. It seems Old Joe did not like that concept. He could not change the law but he did make the suggestion that it would be a good idea that all companies have a different policy. He wants the corporate boards to make decisions made on the effect to environment, to social biases and governmental issues. The last, just so you know, means, how it effects the dems.

As I say, it is not required. It is not law. However he is pushing it just as far as he can with the power he has. And, as you can see, it is having its affect. For some reason, corporations seem to think it will help them to join the crowd and make the leap, knowing that it will be disastrous to their bottom line, and, of course their stockholders.

It does make me wonder, what the stockholders of Target are thinking right now, as they saw their stocks plummet. I think we know what the Budweiser stock holders are thinking… damage control. I have seen a few of the commercials since their leap into ESG and it looked an awful lot like they were trying to do some serious backing up, all the while, trying to make if look as if they aren’t retreating. They’ve trotted out their Clydesdales and given to the veterans. I wonder just what is next. Well. I know what would be best. A simple statement of admission to the mistake and an apology. However, if you’re waiting for that to happen, you can forget it. That alphabet soup group will not let that happen.

Anger

First, to keep anyone from getting the wrong idea, this applies to both genders. When I use the masculine pronoun, it applies to both male and female, though not necessarily equally. In grammar, we are told to use he or him anytime we know not the gender. I don’t really agree with that, but the only way I know around it is to say him or her or use he/she. That gets clumsy after a while. So to remain grammatically correct, I will use he as well as him for both genders. Of course, no problem with plural. They and them are already clear enough.

At any rate, the reason I write this is that there is something I noticed about people and anger. People, in general hide behind masks. I am no exception. No one knows me better than my wife but there are things even she doesn’t know about me. I would guess it is common with everyone. None of us wants the world to know our deepest darkest secrets and desires. We all hide things, sometimes even from ourselves.

Anger, however does have a tendency to expose some of those things we wish to keep hidden. When we are angry, we lose control of ourselves and we tell others a little of that we would rather not be known. So. If you really want to know that other person, watch what they do when they are angry. That which you see everyday is only what he wants us to see.

We are all experts at pretending to be what we aren’t. Moreover, the more important that that one person is to us, the more we hide what we are from them. It’s just natural.

Here’s one that will likely get me in trouble. It is a common thought that one of the best places to meet the person of your dreams is in a church. After all, we should all be equally yoked. It’s biblical. However, it is also one of the worst places to meet a your future mate.

He is going to be at his best behavior in church. He will be hiding his real self from others more while in church than when he is in a bar with all his rowdy buddies. Just saying. Moreover, he will be even more careful not to lose his temper. I mean, we Christians just aren’t supposed to lose our tempers. It’s what we are taught even while we are still in diapers.

But we do. In spite of my best efforts, I lose my temper. I say things that I later wish I hadn’t said and I do things I wish I hadn’t done. Daily, I practice control from the time I wake until the time I sleep. However, it’s a good thing the TV doesn’t get its feelings hurt. My wife does ask me from time to time why I yell at the TV or radio. She said it won’t do any good. On the other side, it doesn’t hurt anyone either. Better I take out my anger at it. Well, maybe there are exceptions. I have managed to keep from losing it bad enough to put my foot through the thing, tempting as it is. I did hear on the news of a sheriff that put a bullet through one. I wonder if he went through any anger management courses.

I don’t know. I am not sure but I think anger is something that only humans have. Generally, when one animal attacks another, it is mostly for self-preservation or food, sort of the same. However, mankind can do some pretty horrid things while angry, especially while under the influence. Oddly, men have been known to kill their wives, the person he’d likely give his life to protect. Both men and women abuse their children while out of control. I simply don’t understand it. And, by the way, some of these people are highly respected members of churches.

I don’t understand it. I have seen it. I have heard of it. A leader of a church loses his temper and a very pleasant, amiable woman ends up in the hospital. Try as I might, I can’t figure it out. Well. I’m not alone. I suspect there are likely many in law enforcement that have seen it more than I have.

Oddly, for this reason, I make two important suggestions. If you are one of those, as me, who has a tendency to lose his temper… when you see you are losing it, walk away… before you do something you will be sorry for later, as I have. It’s why I take a walk when I feel myself hitting the boiling point.

Secondly, advice that is worth all your paying for it, don’t marry someone until you’ve seen him angry. If you have never seen him or her angry, then you don’t know him. I can assure you of it. Besides, it’s common sense. If that person is the type that will resort to physical violence, better to know before the “I dos.”.

One more little thing, a guarantee. If you do not know what he will do when angered before you get married, you will afterward. There are no backspace keys in life. Therefore, be careful before making those those lifelong decisions. Divorces are possible, but it will not erase that mistake that was made.

I Was Just Curious

From the time I was seven, I was brought up near Disneyland. Actually, that’s not 100% true. The theme park was just an orange grove at the time.

Yup. For some time, when we passed the spot, the remark was made, “That’s where they’re building Disneyland.” Perhaps the one thing that was most visible was the Peter Pan pirate ship.

The transformation that followed was simply unimaginable. The area around Disneyland went from orange trees to hotels, motels, restaurants and parking lots.

The whole Disney empire exploded as well. The studio turned out one huge success after success. The theme park grew in size and attendance.

First time I attended, it was about 3 or 4 dollars a person. If you didn’t go on the rides, that was it. Most, however, bought books which included admission, a few each of A through E tickets. The A tickets, well, most used about half of them. The prize tickets were the E tickets. Invariably, most bought extra E tickets.

For a while it actually caused a frequently used expression, “Well, that was an E ticket,” implying it was a really good experience.

Well. Things have changed and they have changed. Just getting into the park is horribly expensive. I don’t know how people afford it.

Just out of curiosity, I looked it up on line. First, I had a difficult time determining what it costs for 1 day. All the quotes I saw were for three days or for multi-park costs. It seemed to me a classic up salesmanship.

It is as if, if I want just a day in the park, then they have no interest in me. Well, I did find the cost, sortof. It changes, depending on the time of the year.

Well, they may not have much interest in me. The feeling is mutual. Ever since Walt Disney died, the whole empire has been taking a dive, big time. Their movies are failing. Their park attendance is slipping and even ABC is having problems.

It’s sort-of what happens when companies go woke. It’s sort of what happens when they produce children’s movies with adult subjects and inappropriate material in them.

Moreover, they seem to lack originality. They keep redoing old movies with a woke touch. It just really doesn’t work. Most parents won’t put up with it.

It’s showing up on Disney’s bottom line and they just don’t get it. It would seem they believe that if they keep trying, that round peg is going to go though that square hole.

Controllers

I don’t exactly know why it is but there is always an element of society that likes to be in control. Throughout history, we have had our pharaohs, kings, tzars, emperors, casers and on and on. Invariably, they have two things in common. They say they have the good of the people in mind and they always have huge egos. In some cases, they proclaim themselves to be gods and frequently do all they can to live eternally. (Not with much success)

Well, actually, they have two more things in common. They love to have absolute control over the entirety of their realm, and they want their realm to include the entirety of world.

Hitler and Mussolini had dreams of world dominance. Naturally, had we lost the war, the three empires would eventually have to fight it out to determine if we all would speak German, Italian or Japanese. As controllers, they would have never been willing to share.

It seems as one controller goes down to defeat another stands ready willing and able to take over. Here lately, they’ve been coming at us in bunches. Even before Hitler, Stalin was ready to take his position in history. We finally deal with Hitler and Mao shows up on the world stage.

Then, there are the dozen, or so mini dictators who kept popping up. They showed up in Central and South America. They tried to seize control of Africa. Then, while we drive one dictator out of Cuba, we find out we just installed another. I’m sure the Cuban’s appreciated that. Of course, Castro said it was for the good of Cuban people. I think that was a lie and I suspect there are few Cubans that would agree.

Now, we have Putin, the man that snatched monarchy out of the immature democracy that preceeded him. At least the man is honest. He’s not doing it under the premise of creating a utopian society where all are equal. (You notice, always these utopias always have people who are more equal than others.)

All the folks like me just want to live out our lives in peace. The problem is that every time we turn around someone else comes along and starts a war with us, of course, promising peace and equality.

The Bible tells us that there will be a man who will be successful in taking total control of the world. He will promise peace and prosperity. For a while, there will be peace but not for long. The man will bring war, hunger and a horrible economy. The average family will not be able to purchase a loaf of bread. There will be disease and I would suspect riots. Not many will sit by under these conditions and do nothing.

For seven years the man will be the ultimate controller. At the end of the seven years God will put an end to it. He will put Satan and the man away for a thousand years. During that time, Christ will rule this world. The controllers popping up and taking control will cease. Jesus will see to it.

For sure, you do not want to be around to see those seven years. They will be the worst seven years on this planet.

There is a way to avoid it. Accept Jesus Christ as your savior. Before this all happens, Jesus will take those who are saved out of this world. We who are born into the Kingdom of God will be with Jesus through the whole thing. The suffering will only be for those who refuse to accept Jesus as their savior.

Maybe, possibly sounds like a good idea to accept Jesus as your savior, the earlier the better.

As for those controllers. They will get everything they have coming to them, including the devil. You certainly don’t want to be counted among them.

Controllers in Control of the Churches

It is no new idea of mine that it is time for our churches to rid themselves of control by DC. One might ask, “How is Washington controlling our churches?” By the tax-exempt status. The law says that if the preacher speaks on politics, then they are in danger of losing their tax-exempt status. Therefore, they don’t speak on politics. Therefore, DC controls the subject from the pulpits. It is the same way that Washington controls the schools, the speed limits and who knows how many other things.

But, if we give up our exempt status, then people will stop giving to the church. They will go to other churches. Sounds just exactly like what they want us to say. Hence, I say, DC has control of the churches. Right now, it is in a minor way. However, I suggest it will only get worse, not better.

Moreover, I don’t think God likes the idea of Old Joe controlling what is said from the pulpit. If God directs the preacher to speak on the subject, regardless of the subject, Joe really ought not have any say.

Next, do they call abortion a political issue. Already, it is getting difficult to bring up homosexuality, though the Bible makes it quite clear that it is not political. What happens when Old Man Joe fusses for churches speaking about January 6. The instant a preacher says those imprisoned should be pardoned, bang, there goes the tax status.

After a while, the line between politics and religion will be blurred more and more through time. Better that we lie down the gauntlet now. Tell them, it’s First Amendment territory. They have no business telling us what we preach or when we preach it. It is called freedom of speech. It’s called freedom of religion. It’s not called Remote control by DC by improper taxation.

We might lose some folks from the pews. Maybe it is better.

Then again, those churches that don’t mind receiving instruction from DC, then, by all means, say nothing about politics. Say nothing about abortion. Say nothing homosexuality. Careful about what say about crime and law enforcement. Mostly, don’t say a word about the candidates and what they believe. If we take money, then it’s not legal.

As my aside. Bear in mind, there are churches that have no problems maintaining their tax-exempt status while talking about politics, politicians and even encouraging politicians to speak from their podiums. They teach what the dems teach and they have no difficulty in blatantly disobeying the law. The dems have no difficulty blatantly ignoring the disobedience. And of course, one must be very careful about pointing this out.

The Devils Most Successful Counterfeit

My last post dealt with counterfeiting and the world’s biggest counterfeiter, the devil. However, I saved this for a separate post as it is particularly angering to me. I would guess it also angers God in that it leads folks away from Him and to death, the counterfeiting of religion.

To the best of my knowledge, the Bible does not mention false religion that much before the flood. The first mention of idols, as near as I can tell, is when Jacob was returning to home with Leah and Rachel. Ever since, it has become a constant subject. It is why Israel was split into two countries. Soloman, in all his wisdom worshiped the idols of some of his wives.

And so it is, ever since, we read about false gods. One of the reasons God destroyed Egypt was because of false gods. One of the primary reasons that God allowed Israel to go into the promised land was the false religions being practiced there. And, finally, it is why Israel was overtaken captive and then Judah.

Repeatedly, the tribes of Israel turned their backs on God and they worshiped false gods, counterfeits. Over and over, that was the main reason for Israel’s sorrows. Oddy, even while Moses was getting The Ten Commandments from God, the Israelites were worshiping counterfeits. I would suspect the devil felt particularly proud of himself for that one.

But today, we don’t have false gods, right? Wrong. In the first place, there are still religions in this world that bow down before pieces of stone and pray to the things not living. They bow down before big likenesses of Buddha. They still worship all manner of gods throughout Asia and the South Pacific. They are all counterfeits and they have not the power…. Let me rephrase that. They have no power other than in the minds of those worshiping them.

God set up a religion for the Israelites. They were to worship him only at the Temple and only Him. They were given strict instructions as to how. They were to bring to Him the tithes and sacrifices to the Temple. They were forbidden to worship any other gods anywhere at anytime. Yet, from time to time, they worshiped the counterfeit gods even to the point of sacrificing their children. Then, after being punished, they repented and turned back to God.

Where did the idea of the counterfeit gods came from? You need to ask? Isn’t it obvious. The devil was behind the false gods. He was behind the false religions, and he was behind the idea of sacrificing children. The end of all of this was great sorrow, even without God’s punishment. The natural result of counterfeit religion is sorrow and grief.

When Jesus rose alive and left an empty tomb, the world changed, I would guess instantly. It is my guess that it changed more than any other time, except for possibly during the fall of Adam and Eve. How did it change. Well, I can make a list but let’s stick to the basics.

First and foremost, it allowed the salvation of man. If Jesus did not rise from the grave, if He is not alive physically, then Christianity is just another empty religion. It is just a way of life that helps one man get along with the other. It is just another nice idea.

The evidence is solid. He did arise so Christianity changed the world. No longer is our relationship with God a religious one. When we are saved, we are instantly and forever the sons and daughters of God. Our citizenship is in the Kingdom of God, and we are left here on earth for primarily one reason, to teach others so they too can be born into the Kingdom of God.

And yet, you look around and the counterfeit religions persist. People worship in churches that say they teach Christianity, but they are counterfeit. As said before, for the counterfeit to succeed, it must look real. And there are many churches that look real but they teach religion. If they teach religion, I submit they are counterfeit because of all the religion they teach.

I would suspect, God is tired of religion. He wants to do away with it in all forms. So, when you want to speak to God, go to him through the name of Jesus. There is no other way. Certainly, God can and does use others to speak to us, but if so, make sure it agrees with the Word of God, the Bible. Make sure that those speaking aren’t speaking of themselves too highly.

The other day, I heard a man speak about how we should go to church on Saturday, not Sunday. Well, that’s religion. It refers back to the commandment to remember the Sabath to keep it holy. That simply carries not a drop of water. Most of those who wrote the New Testament worshiped on Sunday. It is a celebration of Jesus rising from the dead. Moreover, we are encouraged to bring our offerings the first day of the week, Sunday. (I Corr 16: 1&2)

If a church leadership wants to worship on Saturday, fine. I have no problem with that. However, let’s not condemn the first disciples for worshipping on Sunday. That is religious and it is counterfeit.

Also, when we want to confess a sin, which will be good, let’s confess to God. He and he alone can forgive us. It is a power that He reserves to Himself and He does not permit it to even the highest clergy.

Most of all, let’s get the counterfeiting (religion) out of the way of our relationship with Jesus. That will be much better, especially for us.

The Great Counterfeiter

I suppose it’s been close to 10 years now. Not absolutely sure it’s true, but the story goes like this. A group of high school kids, as an experiment, decided to see if they could make and pass off counterfeit money produced with a scanner and high-quality color printer. When they found out they could, they did.

Of course, that’s not legal, even if it works. For a couple of weeks, it had the Desoto County, MS area in something of a tizzy. Once discovered by the authorities, they started trying to chase the source down. On the other hand, when the merchants and banks found out, they started checking the money they received with a fine tooth comb.

To be sure, when just a few start making their own money, to some extent, we all suffer. There are reasons for this. If it is permitted to continue, it devalues the currency. Foreign countries are less likely to honor the real stuff. Besides, it’s all just plain wrong, even if it is an experiment.

Throughout the history of our country, there have been folks trying to make money, the wrong way. We are supposed to go out and get a job, not print it. Unfortunately, money is not the only thing around that folks try to counterfeit. Certainly, works of art signatures, watches, and would you believe, purses are just a few things that people try to copy well enough to pass off as originals. Selling Rolex watches that aren’t made by Rolex have been the plot of many a story. Not being an expert, I don’t know how prevalent that is. However, can you imagine spending a thousand dollars for a watch that is nothing but a knockoff. Worse yet, the thing might not even keep good time. (in itself, that would be a blot on Rolex)

This begs the question, why do people counterfeit? For what purpose do they go to such great lengths to defraud their fellow citizens. While it might seem a simple question to which there is a simple answer, it is a little more complicated. Well, think… what about our Southaven students. They just wanted to see if they could.

And so, it is with many. There is something of a pride that goes with the success of producing a painting that looks just like a Renoir. Then too, it is something of a silent pride that must be kept quiet. Then too, it might be used as a type of weapon. During WWII, the Germans from time to time tried to dump fake money into our system. It provided a double advantage for them. First, it helped them with their war effort, and second, it could have caused a meltdown of our economy.

There is an odd feeling of accomplishment. Even when they know that they will eventually be caught, they do it just for the sake of being able to say, “I did it.” To some degree, the wealth they derive is somewhat secondary to some.

There is something of another question involved. To succeed, the counterfeit must resemble the original. It seems simple but people have gone to all kinds of lengths to make a fake twenty-dollar bill look like just exactly like the original. On the other side, the US mint is going to all sorts of lengths to make impossible to copy, which, by the way, increases the costs of legally making money. When we pull out that twenty to pay for that hamburger and fries, we take it for granted. However, a great deal of money went into the design and printing of those bills. Fortunately, they keep the price down by making a few thousand at a time.

Nonetheless, occasionally, someone comes along and finds a way to get away with it for a while. It’s one of those things that provides job security for the Secret Service as well as the rest of law enforcement. It also keeps the banks busy checking what they bring in as well as what they disperse. No bank wants to get the reputation of passing bad money.

There is however, one counterfeiter who has been getting away with it a long time. For thousands of years, he has counterfeited the work of God. Satan promises the same happiness as God and, like all counterfeiters, provides nothing but grief. He promises the good life and, in the end, he causes death.

Of course, to counterfeit God’s work, he has to make it look good and he does. Indeed, billions have been taken in by his false promises and hopes. Without exception, what he provided the world was pain and suffering. In the Garden of Eden, what he has done for the human race, was to deceive mankind into death and men have been paying for it ever since.

Why do men fall for his counterfeit happiness. It’s simple. It looks good. The successful counterfeits always do. So, we humans, look at the counterfeit and chose it over the real thing. It is a choice of deception, and it will not go away until the devil himself goes away.

As the banks check those twenties, it would behoove us to take a second look. Let’s make sure we aren’t accepting counterfeit happiness instead of the real thing… that which is provided by God, our maker, our provider and our savior. That which the devil and his minions provide are, in the end, far too expensive.

By the way folks, lest you get the wrong idea, I too have been deceived and from time to time am deceived to this day. I speak from experience not theory. Sorrows, never happiness, follow sin. Now, into my 70s, I know about what I speak. If you be wise, learn from my mistakes. Chose God, not the counterfeiter. Chose happiness, not sorrow, pain and grief.

Responsibilities

Of all the things I have learned in all my 70 plus years, taking responsibility was perhaps one of the greatest. Certainly, I learned it while in the Marines. There are three aspects. Knowing, when I do something, I must know that I will take responsibility for it. When I make a legal promise, I must do everything humanly possible to fulfill it. When I take on a debt, assuming there is no deception or fraud, I must pay off that debt.

Maybe it is something well worthwhile for college students to learn that lesson. At seventeen or eighteen, they should learn what responsibility means. They should learn, when they sign the paper, they need to make good their word.

To be sure, they are young. However, 17- and 18-year-olds make the decision to go into the military. They are expected to put their lives at risk and not back out. It is likely the first thing many men and women really learn. However, even then, they usually have some guidance from parents. Unfortunately, sometimes the parents don’t provide proper guidance.

In some cases, parents co-sign for the loan. Maybe, then, they provide just a little better guidance, especially in choosing a major. The father just might spend a little while convincing that youngin that basketweaving might not be the best thing to major in. Maybe, if we started requiring parents to cosign for collage loans, this problem with unpaid loans would simply go away.

Having just put so much responsibility on the students and parents, I digress. These big schools. These outfits that claim that they are for learning deserve some of the blame. Shouldn’t they know better? If they are going to offer useless and semi-useless courses, shouldn’t they require some kind of full disclosure. Some folks actually have more money than they know what to do with. They can easily pay to learn how to appreciate art. In such cases, I say, fine. It’s their money. Let them throw it away if they want.

However, in cases where money is involved, maybe the colleges and universities should be held responsible. I mean, if this is a place where smartness is something that they impart, maybe they should be required to exhibit some basic intelligence. When they see a person headed head-long into a disaster, just maybe they should not permit it. “No, you can’t take that course; not until you demonstrate you can afford it.”

At the very least, maybe they should separate their courses: those that are good for making a living and those that aren’t.

May I go back on my Marine days just one more time? I took Instructor training. One of the first things they taught us was to impress on the student the importance of the course. It makes me wonder just what some of these professors tell their students about how important their subject is. I suspect, no, I know they have to do some real stretching to explain just why their field is absolutely essential.

Okay. I get it. If it were not for art, the world would be a pretty dull place. To be sure, actors go on to provide the world with more than a little entertainment. The Sound of Music, The Fidler on the Roof were both more than entertainment. For those of us who are willing to listen, they have a lot to say. They help remind us of how things were so that, hopefully, we won’t go back there, or even think about it.

However, there are but so many positions for actors. My best guess is that we have, oh maybe, a glut of them. Maybe when someone wants to major in acting, the counselors might suggest at least a minor in math or business. Who knows? Even if the student does become a great actor, he might be able to use his business training to help him handle all his millions.

Basically, I said all that to say this. On such degrees as acting, art, and the like, colleges should require the money upfront, no loans. Or, they should be notified not to expect payment until the student can pay. Maybe them, they wouldn’t offer so many courses on art. I mean the only folks not taking a risk are the institutions of higher learning.

Let the old laws of supply and demand take hold in the halls of ivy. Now there’s a unique idea.

Those with sheepskins ought to be able to do more than serve fast food.

Now that’s a thought. Maybe a person could major in fast food preparation. Why not. A person can actually make money in the restaurant business, though it is real honest, hard work.
