Oh, no. I’m Old

For quite a while I have been thinking and saying I am 73. I have even said so in a few of my posts. it came to me yesterday that that can’t be. The math doesn’t work out. I was born in 1947. This is 2023.

That means, good grief, I am 75. That makes me 3 quarters of a century. Where in the world have the years gone. A recent post made me think of when I was 12. To me, that does not seem that long ago. And just a while ago, my son reminded me was he was 50. If he’s old, that makes me ancient.

I don’t much like the way this age thing works. True, I am wiser, but I am older too.

Just another reminder, none of us lives forever, that is, until we go to live with Jesus. I think I will like that. However, I would like to hold on a little longer. I have grandchildren entering college. Never in the world did I expect to see that day.

Well, I guess it is what happens when a person lives long enough.

Open Defiance

Can we bring up the last presidential election one more time or is everyone going to openly defy any other possibility than as it turned out?

I’m not a big fan of Glenn Beck, but every now and then he says something that is really, really thought provoking. Let me say what he said in a very different way.

Why is it that when anyone brings up a good question or two that everyone and their cousins quickly clamps a lid on it. Of course I do mean that figuratively, but I certainly can’t exaggerate it even a little.

I mean, think about it. I bring up the subject and immediately if not sooner, my thoughts are belittled, before I even bring forward any facts.

Nothing, but nothing was established in court. The Supreme Court refused to even look at anything, defiantly. At the time, couldn’t understand that. Considering the obvious disobedience of the law I still don’t comprehend it.

It is as if someone, somewhere said put a lid on it and no one nowhere, noway, no how dare say anything differently.

You might take note of what has happened to those that did try to swim upstream. Many are already in prison. Many more are on their way. Is this really the way we should be treated when we question the outcome of an election.

If so, there are at least 3, maybe 4 who should be behind bars.

DON’T like it when the rules only work but one way. I do believe most of the rest of us do, or should feel the same.

Baseball

I was actually pretty good at it. At 12 I was scaring 6 ft so I had an advantage at first base. I guess my biggest problem was speed. It is an adage. A coach can teach catching, hitting and throwing. Just can’t teach speed.

At any rate, it all got interrupted with a broken wrist a few weeks into the season. Bummer.

I did watch Dodgers, later Angels and Lakers. Big fan of Drysdale, Koufax, Steve Garvey and Maury Wills. I guess cause he had the speed I lacked. For basketball, I was a big fan of Jerry West. I suspect many others liked to watch him too.

I did like playing basketball too. I was excellent on defense. Not so much at shooting. I think they kept moving the basket. What else would explain it. All my basketball playing was pickup, hours at a time. Kept me in good shape.

Never had much interest in football. Not only was I skinny, but I never could get used to the strange shape.

As an aside, I got good at ping pong while in the Marines. I had a lot of practice and I could put a lot of spin on the ball. Strange, not all that many that interested in ping pong after I left the Marines.

I Must Admit My Confusion

More moons ago, more than I want to count, I had a nice VW van, which I took into the mountains of California and about froze to death. Indeed we left early because the heater on the van could not keep up.

Since that day, I was confused; I wondered why it was that a vehicle designed in, well a very cold mountainous country, has such an inadequate heater. I don’t know. Maybe they just learned to bundle up.

Now, it has again brought to mind. Germany does make battery powered cars, VW, Porches, I think Audis. Do they have problems with their batteries when it gets cold as Teslas.

I don’t know. I haven’t heard one way or the other. I welcome comments. Does anyone with a German made car have problems in Chicago, or Green Bay?

I do have a curiosity, an interest in finding out.

Incidentally, the van heater was fine as long as I kept it out of the mountains.

Son of my Right Hand

Benjamin is common in Hebrew. Indeed, the word Ben is son of. Hence the book Ben Hur based on the name, Judah Ben Hur.

In somewhat more modern times, there is Benjamin Franklin, who some think I was named for. I was named after my grandfather. I also had a cousin with the same name, but he called himself Frankie for the middle name.

I guess I am in good company. There are many good men with the name Benjamin including the priminister of Israel. Unfortunately, the name is also tarnished by a former member of Obama’s staff. Still, as I said before, it was my name a long time before he was born.

I guess if I could say 1 thing concerning it, I wished I brought more honor to it than I have. Maybe in the time I have left, I can bring a little more reason to remember the name.

My Question…

With the driveway all iced over, will it be my wife or me to slip and break bones first. Whenever we go to the car together, I try to steady her. Then, of course, who will steady me.

I didn’t know it at the time but those who are on the south side of the street have, by far, the bigger problem with ice and snow. At our age, about all we can do is hope and pray for it to warm up before one of us is killed on the way to the auto.

I have no right to complain. Many are without electricity and/or water. Some are businesses with fixed weekly costs, which conceivably includeds getting the ice cleared from parking and walkways.

Well, this is me, staying inside and praying for a little warmer weather for all of us in the mid-south. Sorry. Those in and around Chicago will have to deal with the deep freeze on their own. I need to concentrate my efforts closer to home, like out the front door.

Just a Quick Thought

For a couple of decades now, especially since Old Joe took over the Oval Office, the effort has been to go electric. Now we are getting boil orders for water and we must cut back on electric usage.

I guess those that have electric stoves will need to use their propane turkey cooker to boil the water. Which, makes me wonder, just how much water can you boil on one of those things before you need a refill.

Maybe those who bought electric stoves should make sure they keep a natural gas one too…just in case. Those that went to heat their with electric, should keep the old ng home heater just in case. Do I really need to make the same suggestion for the hot water heater?

Of course not. It’s silly to go to electric in the first place.

Frozen EVs

I have taken note of the stranded Teslas of Chicago. Even before I purchased my Nissan I heard about the problem of charging cold batteries. Maybe it’s worse than I heard of. So far, I have been able to charge my battery on my Nissan from my home, though Entergy has requested we not charge cars during high usage.

However, it would seem if you plan on driving an EV around Chicago, it would appear you should plan on parking it at the end of Nov for a few months.

As I have mentioned in some of my posts earlier, there are a few problems they need to work out yet. I guess frozen batteries is another one, besides, range, charging stations and charging time.

Them, there going green engineers better get it in gear if most of our cars will be electric in 2030. That is 6 years away. Just maybe someone with some common sense will ask for an extension, like maybe 50 years.

Incidentall, I still really love my almost new Nissan EV. But then, I have never driven it more than 50 miles. One thing I noticed, it does seem to handle slickery roads better than anything else I’ve driven with 2 wheel drive.

Challenge, singular

Although I have never been officially diagnosed, I have many of characteristics of dyslexia. I am slow at reading especially aloud. I am prone to spelling errors and I repeat words, even phrases as write. Well, the list goes on. I am sure it would have been much better if I realized it as a child but I was past 50.

The main reason I say this is that it would be far better if teachers and parents would keep their eyes open.

By the way, it might also help when you see I have used there instead of their… or visa versa. It might still irritate you, but at least you will understand why. I really do understand the difference between there, their and they’re. I just don’t always use them right. [Does anyone know the difference between peddle and petal?]
