The Trip of a Thousand Miles

We’ve all heard and/or read the saying dozens of times, or at least something similar. The trip of a thousand miles starts with the first step. I must admit, it is a pretty wise saying and I have thought about it many times. Let’s hope I need not explain it.

However, that old fella that originally said that should have added 4 words, “in the right direction.” If we go east when we should have gone west, we only increased the distance by yet another step.

It should be obvious but I’m afraid it’s not. Obama preached hope and change. To be sure, he did change things, but in the wrong direction. Change for change sake is wrong. If you are going to change something, make sure the change is in the right direction. In the previous example, the fella going east, just to be going somewhere, made a mistake.

Since Obama, the whole bunch of dems are continuing in the same direction, which, to be sure is the wrong direction.

For sure, the next time we hear someone preaching hope and change, it would be a very good idea if we just ignore him. He has destroyed the hope of thousands of Americans and destroyed the lives of millions of non-Americans.

Let’s put it this way, under his leadership, we took a giant step in the wrong direction.

Why Have Primaries?

We could save millions of dollars. Think of all the money we spend in having primaries. What we could do is just find someone who no likes and let him or her represent the party. That would work, right?

What is it that I’m referring to? If you don’t know, I’ll explain it. Old Joe won the primary. He received about 14 million votes. He was going to represent the Democrat party. Then, a horrible thought occurred to the hierarchy of the party. If Old Joe were to run, he would lose. Worse, it would cause the loss of many of the down ballot races. They realized if they let Old Joe run, the damage would not only be severe in near future but also in the long run.

The truth is that they would spend decades recovering. Most everyone realized it. Mostly, those who provided campaign funds realized it and withheld their money. Panic ensued. And so it is, in a few minutes, a few men, as it were, in smoke filled rooms decided to negate the votes of millions of voters.

I can understand it. It really does make sense. The problem is that it’s not kosher. It is not the way things are suppose to be done.

However, they decided to take matters into their own hands. No one told them to do it. They just decided to do it all by themselves. The first thing, they knew they had to get Old Joe to stop aside. It seemed so easy. All they needed to do was offer him some money and ask politely for him to step aside.

The problem was, it didn’t work. Then there was more panic. They thought about doing this. They thought about doing that. I am sure they even considered backing a third candidate. It all just came back to the one problem. Old Joe was still in the way.

They visited him again. This time they not only sweetened the retirement, but they added a threat. Well, you and I will never be privy to the conversations. We will never know exactly what was said. I am sure there were no recorders allowed. I don’t think they allowed any stenographers. I am sure they made sure there were no bugs or listening devices. If the actual conversations were to get out, it would be the death of the democrat party and no one wanted that.

At any rate, for some time, they continued to dangle and enlarge the carrot while they kept to threaten and enlarge the stick. Finally, it worked. Whatever the threat, whatever the enticement, he finally accepted the deal.

Then, in a matter of a few hours, millions of votes were negated. They were not given any option. They weren’t asked about it. They were not asked to raise their hands if they agreed.

I would like to think the Republican party wouldn’t do something like that. I don’t know.

Nonetheless, if Kamala goes on to become president, it would be the result of the least democratic method by a party that claims that Trump wants to do away with democracy. Indeed, it is the party that claims it champions democracy. So much for their premises. We know the truth now. It’s about power, not democracy.

If it’s really about the power, and it is, why even go through the primaries? It would seem to be just one huge ruse. It’s one huge expensive fraud. Their goal is, “We chose, you go along like it or not.”

And… Let’s not forget. The media has helped the power brokers all the way, even to the point of changing Kamala’s history in less than a week.

Let’s assign everyone to stores. If you are assigned to store A then you will go to store A. You will not be able to go to store B or C or even D. You will get in trouble if you go to any store but A you will be called into the Store Control Board and you will be soundly scolded. If you complain that store A is the worst of the stores, you will be reminded, it is for the good of the stores, you see. We don’t want any of the stores to go broke, you see.

Ridiculous. Yes. Of course, it is. Yet, when it comes to schools, your choice is gone. Your child will go to school A, even if it is the worst school in the city, the worst in the state, or even the worst in the universe. Can anyone explain that to me, please?

I Say That to Say This

One of the things I regret in life was that I didn’t take advantage of the education program they had while I was in the Marines. They would have paid for 80% of a 4 year college. Actually, it is to their benefit to have educated marines. Moreover, an enlisted man has a chance of becoming a commissioned officer, which benefits the Marines and the marine.

Moreover, in as much as possible, they went way out of the way to make sure someone working on a degree has all the time they can provide. It is impossible to say how many hours I spent waiting for things to happen. This is time I could have spent studying.

Now, as the title says, I said that to say this. For those unable to afford college, the service is not that bad. It is quite conceivable that after a four year hitch, you might very well be on your way to getting your degree.

And besides. You might decide you like the service. Some folks do you know. I would have stayed in but I just wasn’t a good leader. If I stayed in, I was looking at having to lead. Nonetheless, if a person has the drive, a person can do well for himself. By the way, he can also do some good for our country too.

As an aside, you can learn how to lead. And the world is always looking for people who know how to lead.

On the other hand, like me, you can find out that you don’t like to lead.

If nothing else, try the reserves or national guard. It will let you get your toe wet so you see if you like it or not. Indeed, joining the reserves before going regular has many advantages. If I knew what I know now, it is the way I would have done it. A year or two in the reserves right out of high school would have worked out very well before going regular. It is one of those things they like to keep secret.

Dumb and Dumber

Expressed in another way, dumber than dirt.

As mentioned earlier, I have no interest in the Olympics this year and I don’t. However, I do listen to the news. According to the news, they put a man in the boxing ring with a woman. I would use more pejorative terms but I know of none. It was stupid to allow a man to compete as a woman. Even more, it was even dumber for the man to get in the ring with her.

He might have technically won the match, but he clearly lacks a brain. Just think, as he goes through life, that will follow him every day, every year of his life. Henceforth he will be a joke. He might very well be proud of himself. However, every time a real man meets him, he will draw a laugh. Every time a woman meets him, he will draw her disgust. No one will ever respect him. In the end, he will not even respect himself. In the end, his win will be hollow… champion among women.

Have You Noticed That Everything Is Costing More?

It’s called inflation.

It is a way the government has of paying off today’s debts at tomorrows dollars. You see, tomorrow’s dollars, in a few decades will be worth maybe 10 or 15 % less than what they are worth now. At the way things are going, maybe 20 or 25% less.

That is nice and convenient for the government. Not so much for you and me. You see, those dollars will also be worth less for us. My little 401 k is now worth, oh, about 14% less than when I retired, this even though the DOW has basically gone up.

Each time I go to the grocery store, I have to pay more while I buy less. Even the grocer knows it and admits it. If I bring it up, he just shrugged. He can’t help it though he tries. He actually does absorb some of the inflation, which decreases his profit.

Now, let’s look at this thing called inflation a little. While Trump was in office, the inflation was almost negligible. When Old Joe stepped in behind the desk in the Oval Office, it was as if someone threw a switch. You see, the price of oil doubled or more. In case you are not aware, our nation is dependent on energy in general and oil specifically. It was but only natural for the price of all else to go up. It is inevitable. When Old Joe stopped the drilling, he caused the inflation. To be sure, there were other causes too. However, the cost of oil is the one major thing.

Incidentally, with inflation, the cost of running the government goes up too. That’s right. They have to buy stuff too. And they have to pay salaries too. Stuff and salaries have gone up, a lot since Old Joe took over. So he has to raise taxes to pay the extra costs. And, guess what, increases in taxes are also inflationary.

The Daily Walk

It had developed into a regular thing. At lunch, after eating, we used to take a short walk. It was an area of town that had many shops. Of course on each door was a something that identified it, though frequently there was no clue as to what the purpose of the shop was.

It had become something of a guessing game as to what this shop or that shop did. Many of them we never figured out. Then, one of the guys I worked with came up with an interesting idea. Maybe we could lease one one of the places and put a name on the door. Then, if someone came in and asked what we did there we could answer, “I don’t know. What is it you would like us to do?”When I saw the daily prompt, it brought back the memory and I had to have a short laugh. I know, it did not warrant a long or hard laugh. Really, it was a too many words for too short a laugh. Moreover, it didn’t answer the prompt.

When I was 14 or fifteen, I went to visit my brother during summer vacation. He owned a TV shop. Back then, people paid to have TVs repaired instead of just throwing them away. Even back them, I had a pretty good knowledge of electronics and I was a lot of help to him, especially when it came to putting up antennas. Strange as it might seem to people today, that was a large part of the business in the day. It was very common to put up 50 or 70 foot antenna so the customer would be able to pull in five, maybe six stations.

After working on computers for almost 12 years, I really did consider opening up a computer shop. I was good at fixing them and I knew a few others who might have thrown in with me. Then I thought back on my brother’s TV shop. He told me a couple of times, to run a TV shop, it is more important to know how to run a business than knowing how to fix TVs.

I have thought about what he said many times. When I thought about opening a computer shop, his words echoed in my mind. There are many who have started businesses to have them fail on them, not because of a knowledge of the craft but because of a lack of knowledge of how to run a business.

I think before I open any kind of business, I would want to make sure I had some kind of degree in business. Even so, the main reason I was so reluctant to go into the business of fixing computers is because of my fear of coincidence.

You see, electronic components work real good, sometimes for decades. However, they are full of smoke. If the smoke ever gets out, they never work right again. I know it for a fact. I have seen it first hand. So a customer brings in a computer with a problem but still working. He walks out the door and suddenly, the computer he leaves with me lets all the smoke out. Now what do I do? Not only do I have to replace the guy’s computer, but he is angry at me for losing all his data. He gets on the internet and tells the world not to come to me because I am a bad computer tech because I let the smoke out of them.

There are those who like taking risks. If I were single, I would have. However, I had three more to feed besides myself. It was just too much of a risk for me.

It is a real shame I did not open my little shop. I would have made a lot of money at it, until computers became throwaway as TVs.

I don’t know. Maybe I could start a shop making custom shoes. Could I make shoes that people would be willing to shell out $200 for. I’d likely not be able to give them away. It would still be interesting to try it. Who knows. I just might be good enough at business to run a business.

It would be better to take on a partner with a business degree, I think.

If you were going to open up a shop, what would you sell?
