An Interesting Thing About Gas Tax

I’ve noticed two things about gas tax.  Most of the people who want them don’t drive cars, for instance those who live in New York city.  Also, many people like using the revenues received from the tax on things that have nothing to do with cars, such as trains and subways.  Now that’s just not right.

Consider the commuter.  Until I retired, I drove eighty miles a day.  Some drive a hundred a fifty miles to work, one way.  I suspect they have something to say about the way the tax money is squandered, such as on the train that is being built in California.

…but, of course, when the roads become riddled with potholes as such, the first thing those idiots like to yell is, “Increase the gas tax!”  Why not?  It is nothing to them.  Many don’t drive.  Many have so much money they don’t care.  Then too, some just like the idea of controlling just a little more money.  It’s what politicians like to do.  They have two main jobs, make laws and spend money.

I don’t like it when people call for a gas tax.  As far as I am concerned, anyone who has a brain should object too.  In the end, everyone pays those taxes.  If not directly, then indirectly.  Besides, it is a bad thing to squander tax money, wherever it comes from.

By the way, one reason they think it is a good idea to tax gas is because the price is going down.  I think that works one way.  They would never remove the tax should the price go up.

Finally, if they used the gas tax they get now on the roads, they would have plenty for the highways, that is, if it doesn’t line some polititian’s pocket… or his friend’s.

A Matter of Record

To save repeating myself, let me refer you back to my post Oct 9, 2018 about truth.  Some may have already read it.

During the Republican convention of 2008, Lt. Gov. Steele said, “Drill baby, Drill.”  Later, during the vice presidential debate, Gov Palin repeated it.  Some time later, Obama said it wouldn’t do any good.  At or about that time, the price of oil was $142 per barrel.  Then they started drilling in North Dakota and Texas…  I guess a few other places too, to the dismay of Obama.  The point is, Obama refused to release federal land for drilling.  Indeed, he went out of his way to keep people from drilling.

Oddly, the price went down briefly to $26.21 in 2016.  Currently, though the usage has gone way up, the price is currently about $63.  Moreover, we are virtually self-sufficient, something that I am sure frustrates Obama to no end.

Now, this leads me to believe one of two things.  Obama purposely lied, or he was totally ignorant.  I don’t know which scares me more.  However, given his history, I assume he was lying.  He is the same man that said he had shovel ready projects.  (I would still like to know where those billions went that were appropriated.  I suspect it is lining the pockets of his friends.)  He is also the same man that said you can keep your same doctor.  By the way, he is the same man that has me paying a thousand dollars a month for my wife’s health insurance.

Do you really want to believe that man, an admitted liar.  He himself said, “I guess those projects weren’t shovel ready after all.”  I don’t think I want to believe the man.  Now he is campaigning for his cohorts.   Some people actually believe him.  Some have college degrees.  Can’t figure that out.

It is clear that he just wanted the price of energy to go up so that he could pay for his green projects.  By the way, his green projects didn’t work, none of them.  They were all flops.  Not only that, the windmills are still killing birds, including the protected eagles.

Progress or Regress

It was late evening.  My wife drove me to the emergency room.  While she parked the car, I went up to the admissions desk.  I showed my hand to the clerk and asked, do you need to explain why I’m here.  Even though she smiled, she also displayed the proper empathy.

My wife had warned me a few times about walking at night.  I had even been stopped by the police and warned, that is, after they asked what I was doing.  There are thieves out there.  Some have knives and some even have guns.  However, you must understand, it is cooler at night and I need my exercise.

So, generally I walked about two miles a night.  The nice thing about walking is that it exercises some of the largest muscles in the body.  More that that, walking helps to pump blood through the body.  This helps to distribute the nutrition and flush out the poisons.

On this particular night, it was neither thief nor even a gunman that assaulted me.  My problem was a pine-cone.  After I stepped on it, I was on the pavement before I knew it.

At this point, I started to wonder if a knife might have been less painful.

I mean; I really hurt, pretty much all over.  It was as if someone picked me up and slammed me to the ground.  In a way, it was worse.  I never saw it coming.

I started taking account of everything when I realized that one of my fingers was pointing the wrong way.  As I held my hand in front of me, it was pointing to the right, not up as the others.  Immediately, I realized that was not so good.

In spite of my best efforts, I couldn’t get up.  It reminded me of the commercial where the person calls out, “Help.  I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.”  I lay there in street a short distance from the curb.  I wondered if I should have carried a flare with me.  I mean, it was dark.  I did have some fear that someone might run over me before they saw me.

Fortunately, I did have my cell phone with me and, like ET, I phoned home.  It did not take long for my wife to reach me.  I was right in front of my house when that lethal pinecone attacked me.

Well, most of the rest, you already know.  She helped me to my feet and drove me to the hospital.  There, they determined that I had one shattered one knuckle and dislocated another on my right ring finger.

I knew about dislocations.  I had seen enough TV to know that it is painful to fix them.  Well, I just had it confirmed.  When that PA took my finger and straightened it, I jumped straight up off that gurney.  I don’t know how I did that, but I was literally two inches above it.  Thinking I was going to hit her, she jumped back about four feet and she was ready to retreat even more.

Unbelievably, I thanked her.  Now, when is the last time you ever thanked someone for causing incredible pain.  Besides that, I assured her that I knew what was coming and I would have never hurt her.  I did mention that I preferred that it might have been better had she not snuck up on me like that.

I got another one of those smiles, you know, one that was accompanied with empathy.

Believe it or not, I was referred to a hand specialist.  I did not even know that there was such a thing.  He put wires in my finger.  They kept my finger from bending sideways while allowing it to bend properly.  Then he told me to bend it a lot… to keep it from freezing in one position.

Then after a few weeks, he decided to cause me more pain.  The wires had to come out and he decided the best way was to use a big pair of wire cutters.  He cut the wire four times.  (I suppose I should mention that the wire was stainless steel, very strong, very difficult to cut.)

I know it does seem strange, but sometimes, those that want to help us cause us pain, sometimes a lot.  Conversely, some folks who help us mean us harm.

In one of my books, “Stormy,” I try to illustrate this.  I consider the book my best.  I don’t guess my readers agree with me.  I have sold but one.  Also, it is the only one that was commercially edited.  It cost me $8500.  I don’t think I’ll make it back at this rate.

Getting back to my main point, the Bible tells us that work is a blessing from God.  Though the Bible doesn’t say as much, I believe it is a proper conclusion that when a nation deprives a person of work, he is robbed of a blessing, though many will emphatically deny it.

Many times I have been approached by beggars.  I am not talking about people who have disabilities.  I am speaking of healthy able-bodied people who use deceit to get a person to give them money.  I might mention that the deceit is thinly veiled.  They beg for money to buy food.  I offer to buy them a meal, and they go to their next mark.

The fact is that if I give them the money, I teach them that they can survive by begging.  If we all deny them, they just might go out and get a job.  Therefore, by giving him money, I do him a disservice.  You deprive him of one of God’s richest blessings.

All of us come to hard times from time to time.  When I first got out of the Marines, I did accept some help for a few weeks.  Those were hard times.  Looking back on it, I don’t know how I made it, but I did.  I won’t go through the explanations, but I took no money from the government, just a small loan from my wife’s grandmother.

Moreover, let me say this, when you take welfare from the government government, then you become a slave to those who run the government.

Speaking specifically about the democrats, it is their hope to arrange giveaway programs.  That way, they can enslave the population, or at least a large part of it.  To some degree, they have succeeded already.  Those on the dole are afraid that they will lose their freebees.  Therefore, they already control your vote.  If ever they achieve complete control of the government, then they control of everyone.  We will all lose our freedom.

By the way, those on the dole now will work.  The government will make sure of it.  It is the way of socialists.  They use giveaways to gain control.  Then, once they have control, they remove the giveaways.

It is the pattern.  It is the one they have used since the early 1900’s.  It is how they took over Russia, China, Cuba and many others.  They promise Utopia.  Over and over, they have succeeded in their deceit.  Yet, wherever they rule, it is far from Utopia.  For those who like to hug trees, the socialistic countries have the worst records for the environment.  Their only interest is themselves.  I assure you, those in the leadership of Venezuela don’t go hungry.  They live in their nice big air conditioned houses with their servants while those who were promised Utopia go through garbage cans trying to find a morsel that might last the day.  If they don’t succeed, they go to sleep hungry.  If they do succeed, who knows what kind of disease they might pick up?

Even more, they have been robbed of their blessing, work.  Now they beg, not by choice, but of necessity.

I would encourage one and all to vote republican.  More than that, avoid relying on the government for your survival.  If you do rely on Uncle Sam, you will be a slave and the elite will live like royalty.  The socialists call themselves progressives.  Yet, if they succeed at taking control, it will be a regression back to the dark ages.

The Truth

A number of times, I have seen a commercial advertising a certain insurance company.  The commercial, more or less ends… and now that you know the truth…

Actually, I don’t know that the man was telling the truth, or anything close to it.  I am sure there are many other insurance companies that would argue the point and they likely all have their proof.  Either way, I use another company and have for more decades.

It does bring to mind, how is that we know when someone is telling the truth.  I do believe there is one way—consider the source.  In the Soviet Union, there was a news agency called Pravda.  I suspect they told a bunch of lies, all the time telling us that they tell nothing but the truth.  On the other hand, we have a newspaper here in the US that is resembles Pravda.  It is called The New York Times.  They would like us to believe that they are honest and objective, but their bias is thinly veiled.  As I like to say, it is casual to the most obvious observer.

Another way to determine truth is by considering the motive.  Most recently, the dems admitted that they would do anything to stop the appointment of Justice Cavanaugh.  In their own words, they admitted that they were willing to lie.  It would be a small thing to keep someone off the bench that actually believes in following The Constitution, and not making up the law on the fly.

There is of course, the old saying, “Follow the money.”  Hardly anyone is completely immune to considering a bribe, though I would like to think I am.  This is nothing more than another form of motive.  Besides being a reason to lie, it is also a reason for our representatives to do what they know is wrong.

Perhaps a less obvious reason is what I call the back scratch reason.  That is to say, you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.  In this case, you lie for me and I will lie for you.  In the last few years there’s been a lot of that going around.  …and, by the way, the dems are quite good at it.

Finally there are the promises of politicians.  Consider, for decades, the dems have been promising that they will help the African-Americans.  That has not worked out so well for them.  I simply don’t understand why they continued to vote in lockstep for the dems.  Well, now they have a reason to abandon them.  President Trump has given them a reason to follow him.  The lie from the dems has been exposed.  The dems had no plan to help the African-Americans.  Indeed, many of their own have abandoned them for the previous purpose.  They are scratching the backs of dems while the dems scratch their backs, this while purposely ignoring their promise.

President Trump has been called racists.  Yet, in decades, he is really the first one to really help the minorities.  He does not deserve the label.  In spite of those firing fiery darts at him, he continues to help them… and he would help them more if the dems would just get out of the way.

Education

I has been said a number of times that experience is a good teacher, but fools will learn by none other.  You take for instance, a man goes in a bar and has 4 drinks.  Then he successfully drives home, not even one near accident.  From this, he has just learned that he can drive while intoxicated.

Not everything that we learn from experience is good.  How many times do we do things we know we shouldn’t do.  We learn we can successfully do them repeatedly.  Then one day, we learn we can’t.

Diane Feinstein has learned from her experience.  If she can’t stop good men any other way, she can use accusations to delay progress for weeks.  She now knows it works even if the accusation is completely baseless.  Now she will continue as long as she lives, or until it fails.  It will not bother her that it will ruin lives.  Her only concern is for the advancement of the establishment, what I call, the controllers.

To be sure, she has likely failed at her main goal of keeping Judge Kavanaugh from being confirmed this weekend, though I must admit she did come very close.

Unfortunately, there were others that have learned as well.  Many will learn from Dr. Ford’s experience.  Dr. Ford suffered even more than Judge Kavanaugh and it Senator Feinstein doesn’t care one little bit.  Dr. Ford’s trust in her was betrayed and now her life will never be the same.

Feinstein says she never leaked anything about the letter.  To Dr. Ford, it makes little difference.  Her life was ruined… and not by any Republican.  They didn’t even have the letter, or even her name.

Real Treasure

I heard an interview of Trace Adkins on TV a few years back.  For those that know me, this will sound strange.  I am not a country/western music fan, though there are a few songs I do like by country singers.  At any rate, the question was put to him, “Do you buy gold?”  The obvious reason for the question was asked in relation to any prepping that he might do in the event of disaster.

Casually, Mr. Adkins replied, “No.  I can’t eat gold.  I buy land, seed and lead.”

Now there is a man with some real common sense.  If things get bad, the man that has gold will easily part with it for a loaf or two of bread.

Repeatedly, I hear these guys on TV trying to hawk their silver and gold on TV.  If the gold is worth so much, why do they wan to sell it?  Personally, I see three problems with this.  Invariably, I will always have to pay more for the gold than what it is worth.  In the event that I sell it, I no longer have any treasure.  Moreover, no one will ever pay me what the gold is worth.  Finally, gold, in a true disaster won’t have any value at all.  You can’t eat it.

On the other hand, if I am the only one around with grain, I can pretty much set my price.

The books are full of stories of men seeking treasures.  The truth is frequently we already have the real treasures.  Here in this country we have a real treasure that is generally overlooked and taken for granted.  Our founding fathers paid for it, many with their lives, many with their limbs.  Many have fought and died to hold onto the treasure.  By now, I am sure most of you know the treasure of which I speak, freedom… also known as liberty.  Since the Revolutionary War, this country has not know tyranny.  There are few countries in this world that can truly say that today.  …Certainly not Russia.  …Certainly not China.  …and most certainly not Iran.

Of all the treasures on this earth, it is likely the one treasure most worth fighting for.  Yet so few are willing to fight for it.  Worse yet, there are those who stand in the way of those who are willing to fight for it.  To be sure, remember, it is far easier to maintain the freedom we have than to fight for the freedom we lose.

I write this because there are those who want to take our treasure from us.  They don’t want us to have it.  They want to run our lives and tell us what to do and what not to do.  They want to tell us how to raise our children and they want to teach our children the way tyranny.

I ask you, what good is gold if you can’t buy anything with it.  What good is security if you are being told what to think.

I refer you back to the above quote.  The land and seed is good for survival.  The problem is that there are always people trying to take your treasure.  So.  To hold onto the land and seed, a person must also have lead… and the willingness to use it.

For sure, the more I think of Trace Adkins’ words, the more true they ring.  There would not be survival without all thee: land to raise crops, seed for the crops, and lead to protect the other two.

If we are not willing to protect our treasure, there are people that will take it from us.  Maybe you don’t care.  Fine.  You lack the courage and conviction.  Then stand aside and don’t hinder the rest of us.

New York Getting Bluer

More and more, New York is getting more socialist

More and more, conservatives are leaving the state.

More and more, New York is getting bluer,

Which in turn makes it more socialist.

I figure, in a decade or two there won’t be a conservative in the whole state.  Then we get to see what happens when socialists run things.

Then again, we are getting something of a preview already.  A good look at California will give us a good hint.  Then of course, a good look at almost every major city will give us a clue.  Every time those characters in Memphis think about raising taxes, it drives my property value up a dollar or three.  When people start looking for property just outside Memphis, it makes my little house worth just a little more, and the property they left behind a little less.

Those libs running Chicago have demonstrated how quickly they can take a bad situation and make it worse.

I simply do not understand how the African-Americans can look at what all the dems have not accomplished for them and yet they stand steadfast behind them at every election.

Let me state this as clearly as I can.  Socialists are not for the poor.  Their methods insure the poor remain poor.  America is the only nation where a poor man can become a multi-billionaire, if he puts his mind to it.  The reason is because of the capitalist system and the freedom to do what you want.  The socialists do not tax the rich, only those who are trying to get rich.

Consider, if I have ten million dollars, I can lock it up and take a few dollars out every now and then.  I’d not pay a dollar on income taxes.  On the other hand, if I make a million dollars a year and it is taxed at 60%, It will likely take me thirty years to save the ten million.  Hence, it is the man who works the hardest who is penalized by paying the higher taxes.  On the other hand, if I don’t work at all and rely on the welfare state, I neither work nor pay taxes.

Therefore, the only people penalized are the ones who work.  It is why every time New York raises their taxes, their revenues go down.  It is also why the rich leave town.  …and, it stands to reason, if the only people paying taxes are poor or indigent, the tax revenues will be greatly be reduced eventually to practically nothing.

I don’t know why I should have to explain this.  It has been demonstrated time and again.  Yet, when those socialists start talking free this and free that, it seems all past memories are instantly destroyed.  Everyone likes those handouts.

Just remember.  If you want to see what a future socialist US will look like, look to New York and California.  You don’t need a crystal ball to see our future.

Braids

Just heard something I found interesting.  I can’t say for a fact it’s true, but, given the nature of those involved, it does sound about right.  Certainly it is exemplary of socialists.

It would seem that the New Jersey State Assembly unanimously voted to remove the law requiring professional hair braiders to have licenses.  Now that just floored me.  I didn’t know they required licenses.  Then again, I guess I should have.

At any rate, when it reached the governors desk, he vetoed it.  Go figure.  That was as far as the news report went.  There are however a couple of conclusions that a person can easily draw.

First, and foremost, it only goes to prove that socialists don’t have the interest in the poor in mind.  By signing the veto, he also insured that, maybe a couple hundred people will not be able to braid hair.  Also, of course, he protected those that already braid hair.  Hence, he insured that they could continue to charge higher prices and those that want to get into braiding stay in the homeless shelters.  To summarize, it is effective at keeping little gal or guy down.

My second conclusion is that either the man is stupid or someone has slipped him a dollar or two under the table.  I don’t know.  Maybe it is three dollars.  Regardless, I don’t know which is worse.  I don’t know which scares me the most.  Do we want to admit that the governor has the reasoning ability of a ten-year-old or someone who likes bribes.

By the way, for those interested, about half the states require licenses to braid.  I don’t know, but I’d guess most of them are blue.

The next time you find a useless law or regulation, I suspect you will find it was made by a Democrat.  If it keeps the little guy down, then I am sure of it.

Well, at least those of you in New Jersey can rest assure.  The person braiding your hair has successful graduated an extensive training course on braiding hair.  I sure that does make y’all feel much safer.

As a side note, my wife has braided her own hair, even when it was down past her waist.  I wonder if they will start outlawing that.  I know.  I am being ridiculous.  Then again, a week ago, I figured just about anyone can braid hair.  I guess that was my mistake.

I don’t know if a license is required in Mississippi.  I guess I should check before I open a shop.

Dodging Bullets

As near as I can tell, President Trump is good at dodging slings, arrows and bullets.  It seems that it is the main desire to hit him every day all day.  They sling stones, shoot arrows and fire bullets at him on a regular basis, but, so far they all missed.

There is one down side at being able to dodge their weapons.  Those near him need to be careful.  When they miss the president, they have a tendency to do substantial damage to those around him.  As near as I can tell, they have damaged the lives of at least four good people, maybe five.  I suspect, by the time his first term is over, there will be many more innocent casualties.

If this pattern continues, people are going to be afraid to be associated with good men like our president.  Then again, this might be their intentions of those who take aim on POTUS.  In this they have had success and that is a shame.

Outside Voter Influence

The Dems are all in an uproar over the Russians trying to influence our election.  First, it’s not new.  It is an effort that started with Stalin.

Second, they  are not the only ones.  The Chinese raised tariffs aimed at farmers that voted for Trump.  They haven’t said as much, but it is sort of obvious.  The Mexicans have been trying to retake the southwest every since the Alamo.  Moreover, it is no secret.  They said it publicly.

Actually, it’s not just the outside influence.  The Dems have been the main cheering section for first the Soviets, and now the Chinese.  They are helping the Mexicans every day and they don’t seem to care who knows it.

Those who call themselves journalists are right in there helping any foreigner they can find who will weaken the Republicans, even if it causes harm to the US.  They don’t much care what country they come from.

Personally, I believe it should be a felony to accept money from outside the United States in any election, I don’t care what country it comes from.  If it is proved beyond a reasonable doubt, those using the funds should be thrown in prison and he should be removed from office.

I only wished it could be so for funds coming from other states as well.  I suspect that if our founding fathers foresaw such a possibility, they would have tried to put something in the constitution to disallow it.  After all, whey should multi-millionaires in New York or California have anything to say about what goes on in Alabama or Arkansas.  People in their own state ought to have their own say  It is sort of the reason they included the Tenth Amendment.

Many years ago, the Mississippi Assembly decided to make it legal to have gambling casinos.  There was one requirement.  They had to get the permission of the county by popular vote.  Twice, Desoto County voted it down.

There was, to say the least, a big battle that ensued prior to each vote.  Millions of dollars came in from out of state, mostly from Memphis.  (Now I ask you, is it right for people who live in Memphis to decide gambling in Desoto County?)  Some came from New York and some from other places.

Memphis, by default had the big guns in advertising.  They had three TV stations and I have no idea how many radio stations that broadcast into Desoto county.  Much of it was straight forward advertising, but much of it was personal opinion passed in something of a casual way by many of the anchors.  Their attitude was, why not vote to allow gambling.  It is the fix-all for everything.

Those that apposed the gambling had very little money.  They certainly couldn’t afford the TV adds and radio was expensive too.  Mostly, it was word of mouth, churches and a few small organizations.  I feared the outcome.  To me, it looked like they were just going steam roll in here and set up shop.

What really angered me was that the mayors and councilmen got in the act.  The school teachers were telling about how wonderful the gambling would be.  These people were supposed to be representing the people, but it was obvious they had no idea what the people wanted…or worse, they were self serving.

Those that were for the gambling outspent those against it by more than ten to one, yet it was defeated by two thirds of the voters.  They told the outsiders, “We don’t want it!  We don’t want any part of it!”

…and so it was that Tunica County got the gambling instead.  From my observance of how things went in Tunica, I am very happy we rejected it.  The gambling brought everything that we thought it would, crime, corruption and, very likely, organized crime.  By the way, it also resulted in the worst schools in the state  It was the exact opposite of the promise made by the casinos.  The state had to take over the schools because they became so bad.

I don’t know about others, but when outside money comes to my state, I will be very Leary.  I don’t like outside wealth telling me how to vote or what to vote for.  I would suggest that others do the same.  Educate yourself well and guard your vote carefully.  It is very important.
