Take Me Out to the Ball Game

We used to go to see the Chicks regularly. For those unaware, the Chicks was a semi-abrieviation for Chickasaws, the Memphis AA league ball team.

We loved it. Sometimes, we put 8 in the car, between friends and us. Most of the time, it was just the 4 of us. Admittedly, the park wasn’t that great, especially as compared to the current stadium.

However, it was accessable. After paying for parking at the current park, we have to each give up a hot dog and soda. Worse, it takes far more time to drive to and locate a place to park.

We no longer have children at home. My wife does really enjoy a pro game, but not that much. We’ll likely stay closer to home this year.

There are many beautiful Little League fields nearby and there is no cost. Let’s us buy more “peanuts & Cracker Jacks.” Also, there are high schools around. I suppose we will be more wecomed there than in downtown Memphis.

If they made it more convenient, we might risk the hazzards of going downtown to see a game now and then, but apparently, those in the Redbird management don’t value our business. It’s a shame. As near as I can tell, the players deserve more than that. Those actually working in the stadium deserve more too.

How-some-ever, that Redbirds stadium is so much nicer. It just is they had to plop that thing down in the worst part of Memphis… and about the most difficult place to park.

I can’t say anyting about how unsafe parking is. I have no recent 1st hand experience. However, I do believe it is a place the wise avoid.

Missing in Action

Did I mention I was in the Marines. Whilst serving, there was a thing or two I learned. One of those things is that a squadron commanding officer must remain in contact with the squadron at all times.

It just so happened, as a l/cpl, E3, I had to to call the CO, a Lt. Col. Needless to say, it was not something I was used to doing everyday. He answered. I explained the reason for the call. He thanked me. That was that.

When the sec. of defense went missing for three days, just what would have happened if someone called to say we just lost an air craft carrier and there was no one but some seaman, E3 to take the call?

Empty Nest

I guess you could say that we now have an empty nest. We have grandchildren that now drive. Both of our ‘kids’ live close to a thousand miles from us. So, nowadays, when Christmas comes around, we just try to find a restaurant open.

The problem is, with the Chinese virus this year, there are even less places open than normal. So, this year we decided to eat at home. It just so happened I was in a convenience store one night to buy milk and I saw these serving sized BBQ briskets that were chopped up bite sized. It looked pretty good.

Usually we eat turkey or ham for Christmas but this year we had brisket for a change. Nice thing was they were all set for the microwave. In four minutes, the main course was done. In fact, it took about the same time to make some mashed potatoes and heat some canned green beans.

Now I’m not going to say that it was a dinner for royalty, but it was good and we did enjoy it. Moreover, when we were done, cleanup was a minimum, about three minutes.

However, the two dogs also had Christmas dinner. I gave each a half can of dog food sprinkled with small kibble. On the side, they each had a half a can of spam. They each enjoyed their dinner, I dare say more than we enjoyed ours. The hitch was, they didn’t enjoy theirs nearly as long. I suspect they were done with theirs inside two minutes. Then, of all things, they wanted us to share ours with them.

Dogs! Really!

Well, the kids are nowhere around. I suspect after a year or two the dogs won’t be either. One is twelve, the other over thirteen. Both of them are have health problems. Then we will have an empty nest. With us being so old, we don’t dare get any more pets.
