I Guess it Could be an Old Idea

Of all the computer games out there, the only one that really gets my attention is Free Cell. When I first started, I got so frustrated. I rarely won. Then I found out that that, as far as anyone knows, all the dealings can be solved. I don’t know. There are so many combinations. Since I bought this computer, I have won all 70 of the first games I played on it. To be sure, I have gotten pretty good and I have learned to watch for some things.

At any rate, I do hope I’ll be able to pass 1000 on the new computer with no losses. The hitch is, you lose one game and your average will never again be posted at over 99%, at least not with the MS version.

There I go chasing rabbits. That was not at all my intended subject. It is about those commercials they post on the side. You know the ones trying to get me to play that game, I think Forge of Empires. Pardon me, but I have absolutely no interest in the game. However, I must admit the one that did the artwork has really done some outstanding work.

I do wonder if anyone has considered making some calendars out of them. It might not be in their marketing strategy, but, I for one, would be willing to shell out as much as twenty dollars for one. The one showing the train pulling into the station is particularly nice. It seems so much like a photo but yet it is so obvious it’s not. Besides, I have always had a real weakness for steam trains. It is such a shame the diesels took over. Also the detail in the rest of the picture is enough for me to just sit and stare at it until the next ad comes by.

Then again, maybe it has already been tried. If so, and there are any left, does anyone know how I can buys a few?

[Let’s Add a Title] (Oops) Our Castles, Our Castles, Our Homes

Just finished watching the news, which was followed by an infomercial of hometitlelock.com. I would suspect that at any time of the day or night, I can find a station that is or soon will be advertising it or something similar.

I have no idea how much that advertising costs, but it has to be a bunch.

Do you know what that tells me? That tells me that protecting homes is a very profitable business. Otherwise, there is no way they could afford all that advertising.

So, I think we can safely say, thieves stealing homes are not the only ones who make their fortunes from the thievery. It would seem, the aforementioned corporation, the advertising companies as well as the radio and TV stations are likely making their bundles of wealth from it too.

We can stop all this, you know. We can change the laws and we can change the priorities of law enforcement. We need laws that make it much more difficult. That alone would cause a drop in stolen homes. However, if we zero in on and throw as many house stealers as we can and put the in prison, as well, the aforementioned corporation will no longer be able to afford all the advertising.

My personal opinion is, that is a good thing, though some will need to go looking for other means of earning money, maybe something of more purpose.

Fast Talking

A neat thing about computers is the ability to convert the slow talker as me to a really, really fast talker, the likes as no human can do.

They do this by cutting out the time between words. I guess they cut out some of the time in words. The most common place we see this is at or near the end of commercials. I am sure it includes all they would rather not say, but it is required by law. It is the verbal equivalent of small print.

And so it is they say in 5 seconds what they should say in 30. It has 2 advantages for advertisers. I mean, who reads fine print…Who listens to the fast talk, assuming they can. The second advantage is also a benefit for the listener. It doesn’t take as long.

That keeps the price of the ad down and the annoyance for the listener. On the other hand, that which we should hear is being figuratively hidden from us, certainly from us slow listeners

News and Advertising

Buc-ees?

Ever of it. Suddenly, I am seeing news stories about it left and right, and always in a positive sense.

I suspect the public relations department of Buc-ees issued a release to all news organizations they could think of about the possibility of a new store east of Memphis. Suddenly, millions now know about the company who never heard of it before.

Now that is inexpensive advertising. I mean, you can count me among those who never heard of them before. Even if the store never sees the light of day, the company has acquired millions of dollars of advertising without paying a dime.

It does make a person wonder sometimes, just what is news and what is advertising?

Moreover, considering just how much time is given to it on all stations, I have some real suspicious that a dollar or two exchanged hands. If so, it is paid advertising, no matter how it is camouflaged.

In any case, it didn’t effect me. (or is it affect? Maybe both. Never could keep them straight) Fact is, I would have to go through Memphis these days unless I need to. Too dangerous. Too many Memphis drivers. Too many folks up there who like shooting people. Actually, just too many people.

A Thing to Remember While Watching TV

As you sit and watch, it’s a wise thing to remember, their purposes in entertaining you is to gain access to your pocket book. This is true not only during the commercials but during the programs themselves.

Have you ever noticed how frequently alcoholic beverages are consumed around attractive woman and luxurious environments. Products such as breakfast cereal is always turned so you can see the brand. Cars are classy, highly polished, and really fast. Clothing is always well selected. You may not be able see brands but many will want things like it.

From one of the 007 movies, people sought the little “5 minute” breathing device. When asked about the device, the standard reply was that it lasted as long as you can hold your breath. It was their way of saying it was a length of pipe with a hole in the side of it. How disappointing. If such a thing could be made, they could have sold them by the millions. In this case, they weren’t even trying to sell it.

Of course, lifestyles are being sold, very successfully I might add. Unfortunately, quite successfully from time to time. I have to wonder how many see someone hitting it big in Vegas or at a race track. Then they go somewhere and lose every penny they have.

Those operating the tracks or casinos don’t mind the false impression the loser got from the TV program or movie. Truth be told, someone likely made the decision to put the segment in the program in exchange for a little change.

I do talk about this form of advertising a lot. I think it is good to remind folks that those characters on that screen aren’t real. Mostly they aren’t even realistic. However let’s not forget the direct approach.

Here lately, they have started using the direct approach. (make your bet on this team or that player. it’s fun. besides you can get rich quick) Remember, the ad is not to give away money. They are earnestly, very earnestly, trying to get you and me to give them money. May I remind one and all, without providing anything in return. Don’t know about you. They will get none of mine.

As it is said, the fool and his money are easily separated. Best to make sure you actually get get something real in exchange for your money.

Don’t Think I’ll Buy One

I’m not too keen on President Trump’s effort to sell Bibles or his methods. I’m not sure what God thinks about it. However, if I found out someone would read it faithfully, I would gladly pay the $60 in hopes he just might understand it, believe it and accept Jesus as his or her savior.

Regardless of Trumps intentions God’s word is very powerful. Moreover, God can use Trump. Frequently, I have prayed He would use me. Maybe He has. I don’t know. It is not a bad thing to help someone understand the plan of salvation, regardless of the method. That is especially true for the one who is saved.

Still, am not advocating that any commercialize God or his Word.

Purple

Commercial just finished. I turned to my wife and said, “You notice that woman’s lips were purple?”

She nodded and said, “Yeah.”

After, we continued watching TV.

Not much happens around our house. We, neither one could figure why she wanted purple lips. I guess most don’t care. Around here we think about things like that a while.

It does make me wonder, how much is purple lipstick?

Notice to All Advertisers

This just might save you a penny or two, maybe a nickel. It seems there are those that like to look at what I look at. For instance if I look do a search on Peterbuilt diesel rigs, the next day, I receive ads on Peterbuilts as well as a few other rigs.

Here is a hint to put in your DB. I live off Social Security. I can’t afford a Peterbuilt. Hopefully, you can extrapolate that info. I can’t afford diamond rings or necklaces. It is useless to direct your ads at me.

Moreover, there is no sense directing any ads to my mail either, though I haven’t a clue how you get my address, your mail does show up from time to time.

Incidentally, no since trying to sell gold to me over TV. I have no need for that which provides no nutrition, shelter or other practical use. (haven’t a clue what good adding that would do, but it can’t hurt. Somehow they got the idea I can or want to buy useless pieces of metal when I have other real things I must purchase.)

Bob Marley?

I’m leaning back, watching the news and sudenly there is a segment that came up on Bob Marley, which brings up the question, just who is this guy that he should rate a 5 minute segment.

Then, after a short time, it became clear to me. It’s not about him. It is about a movie about him. In other words, it was a 5 minute ad pretending to be news.

Don’t much care for trickery like that. When I tune in to see the news, not pretend news. I kind of like to see important things, not important things to the CBS board.

For anyone intrested, I will not watch the movie. I will discourage others from watching it. Of course, CBS has a bigger megaphone, so I doubt I’ll make a measurable difference. As they say, though, it’s the effort that counts.

At least info-mercials are honest in their representation

To What Purpose?

I get it. I really do. Newspapers, radio and TV all fail without ads. Some magazines have already failed because they could not attract enough advertising.

In the past decade or so, newspapers have started having problems. This even includes the New York Times. Most of us listen to radio, watch TV and or rely on social media.

Due to a lack of choice, I listen to WREC radio in Memphis for news. I am not all that pleased with the way things are going, but it is about all I have. TV news here is horribly biased. Newspapers have no real news and I no longer have cable.

I grit my teeth and put up with that ads on WREC, though I frequently turn the volume down for some of them. They were irritating to begin with but the repitition has become most annoying.

They keep advertising a 67 song and a couple of Jefferson Airplanes songs. Here lately, I have been wondering what they are advertising. Just what is it that they want me to buy. How many times do they think they have to repeat the exact same thing before they will convince me to buy what they are selling.

I know they do need the advertising money. I just wonder, for what purpose if I haven’t a clue what they are advertising.

Don’t think it much matters. Don’t think I’ll be buying much of it anyway. Right now, I am surviving well without it. I don’t think I’ll miss it much, especially if I know not what they are advertising.
