Also, my favorite newspaper cartoons… love BC and Wizard of Id. Very difficult for me to choose between them.
The vast majority of my life, I worked nights. Now that I am retired, I have a very difficult waking with the sun. Actually, so does my wife.
My wife and I had to go to the doctor’s today to get some blood drawn. What a double whammy. Do not like waking early. Do not like being poked with needles.
At any rate, after being poked and prodded for a while, we are returning home and soon we will be checking our eye lids for holes. I am sure we will both have sawed our share of logs.
Well. Not quite yet. I must make a phone call, that is, if I can remain awake.
In answer to the prompt about eating meat
To some degree, I do understand the concepts behind being a vegetarian. I have heard a few. Dining on nothing but veggies and fruits does seem as if it might help a person remain healthier. I mean, I listen to the doctors and it would seem that meats are full of all sorts of horrible stuff.
However, at 74, I’ve seen vegetarians pass on, same as most of us omnivores. However, I do believe some are more sensitive to meat and meat byproducts than others. I have seen folks badly sick almost instantly recover by giving up meat.
On the other hand, there are some that eating bread can bring on death. If I permitted my wife, she would like to eat nothing but peanut butter. Nowadays, we know peanuts are virtually poison to some. By the way, I do like peanuts. From time to time, I eat them by the handfull. It is a very good alternative source of protein.
Are some people sensitive to meat, apparently. Others not so much. We are different. I suspect it is because we have different ansesestry.
Some folks like to go hunting and fishing. I don’t go in for that sort of thing myself. I don’t like killing things. However, I don’t have anything against others doing it. As they say, I do my hunting and fishing at the supermarket. I hate it, but it does amount to the same thing. I just don’t have to deal with the actual shedding of blood.
I don’t know what I’d do if all of a sudden, I had to do all my own hunting and slaughtering. It just might turn me into a vegetarian.
However, as to if it is wrong, I have it on great authority that there is nothing wrong with it. After the flood, God gave us permission to eat flesh. In Exodus, God told us to eat the passover dinner, which included meat. In the story of the wayword son, Jesus speaks of killing the fatted calf. Finally, the proof positive, Jesus prepared fish for his deciples and Himself.
In the old Testament, God makes it quite clear that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. Cain’s sacrifice was not acceptable because it contained no animal sacrifice.
I remember the first time reading through the first 5 books and thinking how horrible it was. There was the sacrifice for this and for that. I guess it is a picture of just how horrible sin is that it requires so much sacrifice.
However, how quickly things changed. In the old testament, the sacrice was an animal. In the new testament, suddenly, the sacrifice was a man. Not just any man, but the Son of God.
I have often thought, in order for me to live, He had to die. Up until that time, the sacrifices were temporary and a portrait of what was to come. When Jesus gave Himself, it was the real thing and permanent, past, presnt and future. The need for animal sacrifice went away. The picture was replaced with reality.
Maybe the vegetarian doesnt really see the full significance of the image. I mean, when we eat meat, that animal dies so I can live. Jesus really did die so we can live. More than that, He did it willingly. It is the primary reason He was born into this world.
He prayed that if there was any other way, but there wasn’t. So He laid down His life for us. By the way, that puts the exclamation point to the statement that there is no other way… no other religion will work!
As a side note, it tells us how horrible our sin is. No other sacrifice is sufficient. No other payment will work.
Yes. I eat meat. God said it’s okay. Still I don’t like it that animals must die for my benefit. I have faith in Jesus for my salvation. I believe He died for me. I don’t like it that my sin was the reason for His death. It is something that I will never be able to repay Him for, but maybe I ought to try. For sure I ought to give Him all my thanks and all the credit. He really did earn it, you know.
I have had a while to think it over. I don’t think I have changed my mind a lot, but maybe there is something to trusting instincts, more than before.
One day, while visiting my doctor, he said something that amazed me. He said there are more nerve cells in the intestines than in the brain. Now you could have knocked me over with a feather when he said that. I mean, the brain is where we do the thinking, right. However, he is the doctor. I would most certainly have to defer to him on such things, especially considering he was a GI specialist.
Now, that does bring up the question, do we do any thinking with our gut. Just think about that last time you received that really bad news. Was it in the head you hurt or in your belly? When you get nervous, do you get butterflies in your head or in your stomach? When you get one of those really uneasy feelings about something, just where is it that you feel uneasy?
To be sure, when something bad happens, does it not effect our digestion? Do we not feel better all over when we discover it is all okay again?
It has caused me to speculate some. Do we actually feel things in the gut, that is besides that over-spiced dinner you had last night? I do wonder if any experiments have been done. Has anyone with a bunch of letters after his or her name looked into the matter? Would it profit us some if we did pay more attention to gut feelings?
Maybe, when I had that doctor’s attention, I should have asked him these questions. If there is anyone out there who has some expertise in gut decisions, he or she might leave me a word or two as a comment. Perhaps, one of two out there might have benefited from a gut choice that you would like to tell us about.
I know that there are ways for setting up a poll but I don’t know how. Maybe you can just leave a brief word or two. And, please, keep it clean. Not only is it my preference, but it is conceivable that children might read it. Besides, it follows one of my main rules, respect others. Just because you like to use profanity does not mean everyone likes to read or hear it.
Daily Prompt Favorite animal
May I assume the question implies other than pets. I guess. If not then it’s easy. Dogs and cats. I have had many of both; even at the same time.
I guess if we are talking wild animals, I do like wolves. I understand some have tamed them but even a half wolf is dangerous. They can turn on you very quickly.
I am also very fascinated by elephants. They do seem to be be quite intelligent. I guess, if they are trained well, they are very friendly too.
Certainly, we don’t want to leave the horse out of it. Then again, horses are almost two different animals. Wild, they are a wonderful sight to see. On the other hand, tamed, they are very good as work multipliers. They provide transportation; work, such as pulling stumps; enjoyment for riding. I did find it odd that, of all the animals, God told the Israelites to not multiply horses. Yet, both David and Salomon did. I have never seen an explanation of why they weren’t supposed to but God did make it very clear.
I certainly love to see an eagle soar. I have also seen a few in captivity, being rehabbed. Also, they had one on the tour of that studio out in Los Angeles. They had the eagle do a few tricks for us. They also had a few other birds, but that eagle was very impressive.
Many times I had a desire to go up to Horseshoe Lake and watch them up there, but it just never worked out. Seems there was always something else to do; somewhere else I needed to go.
If I may digress for just a second. Of all the dogs I’ve had, my favorite were the border collies. It was very nice to have them around and I could tell, they likes us too, especially when it came to car rides. Every day when I got home from work, he watched from inside the fence until I got out of the car. Then he ran inside the house to greet me.

1. Uncourteous drivers. This just almost accounts for all 3 peeves by itself.
2. People who will not own up to that which they do or say.
3. Over advertising, especially when the ads are bad to begin with. This is all the worse when they use my phone, which I pay for to do their advertising. Again even worse when they are advertising for their Medicare programs. It is getting near the point that it irritates as much as fingernails on blackboards.
By the way, this does not include that TV ad for Hershey Kisses they show every Christmas. I will never tire of that one.

Do I prefer beach or mountains?
This is a really tough one. I guess I have to say beach. However, where I live, there isn’t much of either. There are lakes and rivers nearby, but none are fit for swimming. As Mark Twain said, the Mississippi is too thick to drink and thin to plow. There are a few lakes around, but they are nothing like the beaches of s. California.
There used to be some good public pools, but thanks to the lawyers, they went out of business. Law suits made insurance prohibitive.
When we were younger, we rented a hotel room closeby and used their pool. Regardless, the price of hotels with pools have gotten expensive.
It is the worst part about leaving California. Weather, beaches, mountains and amusement parks and folks are still leaving the place. Shows what the dems can do with paradise in a couple of decades.
Right now, I’d say any place where the dems don’t run things is good for me. If you’d kick in some sandy beaches, all the better. I would say Florida, but according to the experts, it will all be 4 feet under water in a decade.
Guess I’ll just stay here.

Daily Prompt
What is my favorite month?
I do like January. It is a bit cold, but it sometimes brings snow. I know many don’t like snow, but here in Desoto County, there is a legal limit to it. It does cause something of a driving problem, but we manage.
I do like February. It is mandatory. My wife was born in February. For years she reminded me of it. Nowadays, she tries to forget but I still remind her. We generally go to a nice restaurant, like Outback.
March is nice. It is when Spring starts getting ready to spring. Some of the flowers start to flower and I need to start getting ready to mow the lawn and pull the weeds.
Of course we all know that April rains bring May flowers. However, it also brings the reminder that the warmth that is on its way. Occasionally we open the windows and allow the fresh air in.
Now may. What a wonderful month this is. This is the month for walks and picnics in the park.
June. Now that’s another wonderful month.
Well, I guess you get the idea. My favorite month is really whichever one is current, though I must admit, each does have its challenges.
At 74, I don’t have many months left. Nowadays they fly by as fast as the weeks used to. I just prize each one of them as the Lord gives them to me.
I guess mostly though, I’ll prize June a little more, not only for the weather, but also, it is the month in which we were married. June 1, 1973.

Where is my favorite place to go in my city.
Okay. Favorite place, favorite thing; it’s sort of the same. Besides, the word, thing, is more accurate for me anyway. Then too, why not use the song title from Sound of Music if I’m able. By the way, it is also one of my favorite songs. I like it almost as much as the title song.
The thing is, I have always liked parks. When I lived in Orange County, we used to walk nearly 2 miles to a park, play for hours, and then, of course, walk nearly 2 miles home.
Irvine Park was not in walking distance, but all of us loved to go now and then, by car, of course. We always had a picnic lunch and frequently watermelon for desert. The park is quite expansive. We ran all over the place, up and down some sizable hills and did some things that wear me out thinking about it today. Then, of course, when we got home, none of us had the energy to make trouble for any of the adults.
The one park that I really loved though, was Griffith Park. That place had enough there to keep me busy for a week, maybe more. That park is huge.
I also spent time in San Diego, which also has a huge park, which also has a huge zoo. I am sure most people have heard of it.
The city where I live now has a couple of parks, which we visit from time to time. Moreover, there are state and federal parks nearby. As a couple of old folks, we don’t run around so much any more. But it is still nice to visit them for a walk now and then. During the right season we watch Little League games and maybe consume a hot dog. It’s gotten to be more enjoyable than watching the pros.
And so it is that my favorite thing is also my favorite place, the park, no matter where I lived.
