A Truly Incredible Ball Player

I must admit, begrudgingly, that Pete Rose was one of the best ball players ever was. About the only part of baseball that he didn’t set records in was in pitching.

The problem was he played for Cincinnati. My team was the Dodgers. There was someone I had more than one “discussion” with, some rather heated. Sorry to say, he was usually right.

The fact is that the only reason he didn’t have more stolen bases was cause he had so many home runs.

Nonetheless, he, as many others, did have a weakness, gambling. Some quickly say it should be ignored and he should be permitted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Some who are reading this probably agree.

Perhaps one day it will happen. I hope not. The game has rules, both on and off the field and these rules have reasons. If the rules have no penalties, then why have the rules.

I shouldn’t have to explain the reason for this rule. It should be self-evident as to why the rule. Gambling by those in the game will ruin it for everyone. Indeed, it almost did a long time ago. I can’t remember the details but you are welcome to look it up.

So it is you make an exception for Rose. Who will be the next exception? After a while, the exception becomes the rule. Then no one will have a reason to follow the rule.

Then too, what if others get caught gambling? Do we toss him out or just slap his hand? If we toss him, does he have a cause to take it to court? It looks to me like he would have a valid argument, legal and ethical.

Sometimes, we make life long decisions as Rose did. More than that, it was a decision he was well aware that it might follow him to and beyond the grave. Despite this, after he was caught, he spent the rest of his life looking for his own personal exception. This makes me doubt his true repentance.

He was saying that he knew he did wrong, but because he was a really great player, he should have an exception.

On the other hand, because even his being an exceptional player, all other players, especially exceptional players will make sure to avoid gambling if they hope to make it into the Hall of Fame. Hopefully, it will do as the rule intended. It will keep baseball clean.

Hopefully, most will agree that this is good and important for baseball, as well as other sports.

As an aside, we all make mistakes that we must pay for. Sometimes for a while; sometimes for the rest of our lives; sometimes even longer, as with Rose. It should encourage us to do that which is right, as well as avoid what is wrong.

It’s the Lie That so Many Believe

One thing I do find incomprehensible, which the government and press would like us believe is that inflation is at a level A. Sorry, I know not what the official word is. I do, however, know what I do pay.

The numbers are simply miles apart. I know that. You know that. Yet close to half of the voters in the US have bought the government numbers, lock, stock and barrel. While we know how much more we buy, when we know how much more we give up day by day, so that we can pay for the essentials.

The fact is, the government is selective about what they sample when they announce the increase in the cost of living. When the inflation is 2 %, this selection matters little. On the other hand, when the inflation is 7 or 8 %, it can make a big difference as to what meats they decide to include in their sampling.

It is, as I have said many times before, their deceit always contains an element of truth. It makes it easier to believe when so many of facts are left out.

It does make me want to see their list of sampling. I would also like to see what is dropped off and what new things are included.

Even more, I would like to see a real honest estimate of inflation for the last ten years. I believe it would be very revealing.

I would say many of those holding government positions would be embarrassed, but you and I both know better. It’s impossible to embarrass people like that.

And so it is, most people in this country believe what they know to be deceit, allowing those responsible for the inflation partially off the hook. Indeed, many of those who know of their deceit will vote for them, knowing the other candidate who does not deceive is better for us.

New News, People Are dying From Fentanyl

It’s true! It’s now on network news.

Some who have been reading my posts, know this is old news, which I guess is an oxymoron. I have been writing on it for at least 9 years. Drug abuse in general is what got me into writing books. That was back in the early1990s.

However, back in the days before Trump announced his first run for president, the fentanyl really started coming on, about 90 thousand a year, mostly youth, deaths.

As near as I can tell, not many paid attention to me. Yet, everyone started demonstrating over the war in Vietnam, with the total loss of around 60 thousand lost there… In what, 4 or 5 years. Moreover, the death in Vietnam did have a purpose. Deaths by drugs are double tragic as they are pointless.

Trump made a gallant effort to decrease deaths by fentanyl and had some success. If memory serves me correctly, he got it down to about 30 thousand a year. It was still far too many, but at least it was going in the right direction.

Then Old Joe got in there. The deaths went right back up to 90 thousand. Now, last report, 125 thousand. I guess that’s what it takes to make network news…for a while. After a week or two, it will be back to just a few folks like me, and the parents complaining. Don’t expect the network news to stay after it.

After all, after just a week, it’s no longer news.

It would behoove us all to remember, just because they aren’t being reported, doesn’t mean people aren’t still dying from it.

New Things

I sent off for another Amazon Fire. It’s my 5th and it will replace my T-Mobile tablet. I’ve got to admit, the tablet has been good. It has done most of what I wanted. However, I have drop-checked one too many times and the face keeps coming off of it. It is a bit frustrating having to keep putting it back.

However, not only was it only 7 inches, I am divorcing myself from T-Mobile. The tablet costs me $50 a month and I don’t need that. The Fire will do all that the tablet did but a lot cheaper without the phone line. Also, I will have to be close to a network to send or receive anything with the Fire.

The fire is 10 inches and the battery will last longer. There is one thing that I must fuss at. Moving files back and forth between my computer is not so easy, as it was with my new phone. Don’t know why they make that kind of improvement, but I am managing. Most important, after initial setup, I won’t be transferring much between my fire and computer. Most all will be going directly through the network.

Something did happen that did confuse me some. Maybe I need to converse with someone that understands how these new things work. I played a song on my Fire and it came out the speakers on my computer. I’m not sure I can change that. I hope I will be able to play things on the Fire without the the computer. The small hitch is that I haven’t a clue about how good the sound system is on the Fire.

I have a Rukku TV, almost new. I’m not totally sure, but I am beginning to think I can cast the image and sound from the Fire onto the TV. I don’t have a clue why I’d want to do that, but I guess, if I can, I might keep that in mind.

Something tells me, this new Fire will be full of all kinds of surprises.

As an aside, does anyone know anything about Hugh’s internet. T-Mobile is getting too expensive. Already I have decided to terminate my phone service with them. I also have internet with with them. I just might be stuck with them for a while anyway. It’s either that or do my internet work at the library, which I may do if T-Mobile keeps causing me grief.

By the way, does anyone know why it is that they won’t let us just copy stuff to and from the phones as they used to. It really worked good until I got this computer.

Increase Corporate Taxes

Of all that that Kamala wants to do, interestingly, it is the one thing she is most certain of. Interestingly, it is the one thing that will hurt the middle class the most, which, she says, she wants to help so much.

Please follow this. It is not that complex. When the US corporate taxes go up, the US moves elsewhere, like Mexico. When the corporations head south, so do the jobs, literally as well as figuratively. When the number of jobs decrease, the wages decrease. Then, as I said, the middle class is hurt the most.

It doesn’t hurt the millionaires. If it did, they have planes and boats. They can leave. The middle class, for the most part, doesn’t have that option. It doesn’t hurt those on welfare. They will still receive their welfare, that is until the governments at every level start running out of money.

Oh yes. No problem. The government is getting money from the corporations, that is until that last of them decide to leave the US. They can do that you know. Unlike the Soviets, we don’t prevent corporations or people from leaving most any time they want.

It is the way it was before Trump became Pres. Trump. One of the thing Pres. Trump was to encourage the businesses to move back home. Now Biden and friends are encouraging them to leave again. Hence, it will return to the way it was before Trump was elected.

Incidentally, for those interested, bringing illegals in from the south also drives wages down. Then you already knew that, right? The more folks seeking the jobs the less the value of labor.

Observation of Security Cameras

About 2 or 3 times a year, someone will come by and try to sell me a security camera. Well, actually, they would love to sell me a complete thousand dollar security system. I don’t have the money for that. I have big car payments and a bigger insurance payments. A couple of thousand a year for my house, a couple of thousand for my car.

Maybe I should take my drill instructor’s advice and not buy things like that. Then, there would be no upkeep or insurance. Somehow, in the next few months, I will have to buy some real insurance. The tree at the corner of my house is starting to work on the foundation. It will likely cost me 2 K to bring that thing down and keep it from tearing up my home.

At any rate before you got me off subject, I tell them no. I can’t afford it. One guy got very indignant with me. I got the impression he thought I was lying to him. Like, what difference does it make. I don’t have to explain my decision to him. What in the world would make him think I owe him any kind of explanation.

At any rate, the latest salesman got me to thinking. Do the things work? I mean, if I put a bunch of cameras all over the place and someone steals something, will it help me recover my property?

That, in itself creates other questions. If the thief can find much worth steeling, I suppose I will have to tip my hat to him. I have an antitheft method that works good. I simply don’t don’t have enough to make someone want to break in.

At any rate, let’s say he breaks in and runs off with my old $100 dollar TV. Just what would be the chances of me ever seeing that particular TV again. Actually, my wife has a wedding ring he could steel. However, if he took it to a pawn shop, the guy would laugh it him. He might give him a ten dollar bill for it. It’s not gold and the stone is fake. The fake looks really nice but it’s fake. When we got married we couldn’t afford one. (That’s OK. I have a fifty year marriage instead)

So, here I am, still. Wondering how successful would I be in retrieving the TV. It makes me think about all those news reports on TV. They flash a picture up on the screen and they ask, “Have you seen this person?” “If you know this person, can you please call the police?”

Sometimes, I’ve thought about taking a copy of the photo around Memphis and see if I can find the culprit. Honest, it does make me want very badly to help. I know what it is like to have someone take things from me. It just is that most of the time, they guy has his face covered, usually with a hoody. (maybe we need to outlaw hoodies) The other half the time, if I passed the man on the street, I wouldn’t know it. I never was all that great at remembering faces, especially those I will likely never see again.

I would guess this world is full of folks as me, who isn’t good with faces.

And so, it makes me wonder, just how many people get phone calls when they put something like that on the TV. It makes me wonder, of all the times that a picture is taken of the thief, how many times is it that the thief is caught as a result?

If someone knows an instance or two when their security camera helped, maybe you could send me a comment. I don’t mean where the neighbor is caught but rather some stranger breaks in and you lose the family silver. Did you ever get it back because of the camera.

For quite a while, people steered clear of cameras. Not so much anymore. It would appear the crooks have come to the same conclusion as I have. I don’t think the things do much good.

I wish they did. Then I might buy one, just to keep people from breaking in, even if I have nothing.

Ben’s Rule on Sequels

If you don’t like the show put on by Old Joe and friends, what in the world would make a person think they would like the sequel? After all, it might be a different puppet behind the desk in the Oval Office, it would still be the same puppeteers.

I might add, though I am not the best judge of puppets, this one seems to me to be malfunctioning. She’s stuck on using the same words, the ones that have little meaning. Just wondering, am I the only one to have noticed that?

One Year With the Nissan EV

The other day, Nissan sent me a message that my car was due for my wheels to be rotated. When I got there, they told me they were wrong. I suspect the message came from some central place and they didn’t know how little I drove.

At any rate, I did have my battery on my FOB replaced. It is supposed to be good for two years. It likely would have lasted three, maybe four. Just the same, I feel safer to know I have a fresh battery in there.

I guess Monday or Tuesday, I will have the wheels rotated, considering that it is now past time. In the meantime, I did not have any oil or air filter changes. I used to take my Chevy into the Firestone place. Nowadays, I don’t do much business with Firestone, or anyplace for car maintenance. I just drive right by them.

On the other hand, I did go see my insurance agent today. I left with about $2000 less. I could have made almost 3 car payments with that. So, it’s costing about 800 a month to own the car and about 180 a month drive it.

Let’s face it. In these days, wheels are expensive, no matter what kind.

Kamala Failed the Open Book Test

She knew what the questions would be. No one had to tell her. It just stood to reason what the questions would be. None the less, it wouldn’t have surprised me if someone did tell her that someone would ask the one question that was on everyone’s mind.

Moreover, she knew the answer. She knew exactly what she was going to do after taking the oath office. The problem is that she can’t say. You see everyone knows what she would do. She just knows she can’t say. She must go through the pretense of not knowing. If she said what she would do, she knows then that no one would vote for her.

And so it is, she won’t say her answer aloud nor will she say what she won’t reply. And so it is that she won’t answer anything. She dodges all questions and instead of speaking to the question, she speaks about what she wants to talk about. She realizes she is facing the reality that if she says what she will do, she will never have a chance to do them.

And so she sounds very much like I sound here, speaking in circles. It is what politicians do when they know an honest answer is political suicide. I guess a person can assume that they will do what they refuse to say what they will do.

Then too, I guess it is conceivable that she knows not what she will do. I suppose that is possible too. If a person knows not anything, it does make it difficult to sound intelligent.

Incidentally, I would still like to hear Kamala’s definition of a what an assault weapon is. I mean, if she is going to be The Commander in Chief of all our nation’s forces, shouldn’t she know what an assault weapon is? I haven’t heard anyone ask her and I certainly don’t think she is going to just tell me. Do you suppose she might be embarrassed if she was put in a position where she had to come up with one. Would she just stammer and studder as she has been or will she come up with the proper definition, assuming there is one?
