I’m Retired

So I’ll reply retroactively. Actually, unless my memory has deceived me again, I think I already said something about that. Well considering the number of posts I posted, it would stand to reason I did say something about it.

I used to have a really good job. I had checklist I had each night and I did what was on it. I started at 5:00 PM and left about 1:00 AM. Moreover, I worked alone. There was no one around to complain about what music I played or how loud. It was better than being at home where my wife complained about the sopranos and the volume. (singers, not the mob show) Also, sometimes I tried to sing along, which she would have really complained about.

I listened to show tunes, songs by John Gary, Ed Ames, Percy Faith, ABBA, Simon and Garfunkel, and kind of the whole pre-80’s things. I listened to some pre-1950’s things. I was constantly adding to my list of selections. It irritates me that I have lost a few of them.

Many of them were of special interest. Simon and Garfunkel produced the song, “Homeward Bound.” While I was in Vietnam, I was not the only one who liked that one. I know. It has nothing to do with those of us carrying around a rifle and wearing a helmet. Still, many of us did adopt the tune.

I listen mostly to same thing now. I have added a little. I listen when at home, sometimes while writing posts. I listen to them while walking. I listen to them while in the car. By the way, the car system has about the best sound, especially with it being electric. No engine noise to interfere.

There are two differences now that I’m no longer listening at work. I have to turn the volume down and I can’t sing along. My wife would complain and, maybe, the neighbors.

I wish I could listen while eating in restaurant, especially with some of what they play over their speakers. I suspect the management would complain. If they didn’t some of the customers would.

What do you listen to while you work?

A Whole Gaggle

The wife and I were driving on a small road that goes from Baptist Desoto Hospital to Airways when I had to slam on my breaks. That’s right. To my surprise there was a gaggle of them walking in single file across the street. They were pretty much equally spaced and not in much of a hurry, about 20 or so geese. (neglected to count them. another reason for the camera)

They didn’t bother going to a crosswalk and they didn’t wait for a walk light. They gave no warning. They simply walked across the street.

I wished I had one of those dashboard cameras. I keep meaning to get one, considering the Memphis drivers down here. I might could have posted it on U-tube or one one of those other things.

After I brought the car to a full stop, I turned to my wife and asked, “Why did the gaggle of geese cross the road?”

She just looked back at me, shrugged and said, “I don’t know. Why?”

If anyone knows, please tell me.

An Ounce of Prevention

One thing I never understood is why President Bush never thought about prevention. He was a pilot in WWII. He should certainly understood the concept. When Saddam Hussein made threats to Kuwait, Bush should have responded immediately. It should have been enough to simply tell him not to do it. With our national power at the time, it should have been eggnog.

However, if he really wanted to make a threat, make it simple. Tell him if he attacks Kuwait, then his southern oil fields would soon belong to the the USA. He knew it could happen. He knew the oil was a big part of his power. He would not have wanted to lose that oil. He would not have gone into Kuwait.

Even if he had, conquest of the oil fields would take weeks, if that long. There would not have been a need to build up troops. The Marines with the assistance of the Navy could have gone in there, and the Iraqi army would have run.

There would not have been a need to set up a no fly zone. There would have been no need to search out Hussein and there would have been no need to for the second war. They would have been no attack on the trade buildings in NY, NY. Thousands of lives would have been saved and the US would have had all the oil we needed.

Most important, the world would have know better than to threaten the US. We would have had no reason to go into Afghanistan. Oh, and by the way, don’t you know the leaders in Iran would have taken notice. Do you think they would be trying to gain the Nuclear advantage. Do you think they would be providing funding for terrorists organizations. All any president would have to say is, “You remember what happened to Hussein? We can take your oil fields too, you know.”

It is important for our opposition to know what we can and will do. It will save lives, and not just ours. It would have saved lives world wide.

This evening, I have two asides. Bush would have been able to keep his promise, “No new taxes,” and he would have won the election. Low cost fuel would have helped him too. Clinton would have never been elected or impeached.

Also, the Arab countries would have never been able to use the price of oil over us. It is conceivable that the price of gas would have gone back down to close to a dollar and remained there.

To be sure, there would still be wars and rumors of wars. Jesus told us this but maybe a little less so if Saddam had never gone into Kuwait. It would have been a good ounce of prevention. It is but one reason I am so impressed with Trump. It is how he works. He doesn’t believe so much in war, but in prevention. Prevention is more betterer every time.

Hard Headed?

I was napping, as I do too much of these days and I was awoken by someone at the door. When I answered the door, I was still a little groggy and it took me a while to figure out he was trying to sell security cameras.

When I realized it, I explained to him that we are living on Social Security and we are looking for ways to save money, not how to spend it. I went on to explain that I had no money in my little budget to buy security cameras. Then of all things, he asked, “No money at all?”

I said, “Look, let’s get down to basics. The reason you are talking to me is that you are trying to get my money. But you are wasting your time, being as I have none.”

I am sure he would have continued to figuratively hit his head against the wall but I turned and went back in the house. Only then did he leave.

I really don’t much understand him knocking on my door anyway. A quick look at my house will tell you two things. I don’t have much money to go buying things I don’t really need and I certainly don’t need some expensive security system to protect what little I have. As a side note, I have about come to the conclusion that the cameras don’t do much good anyway. It seems every night on the news, I see someone has been robbed and they have some video to prove it. However, beyond that, I don’t see the video doing any good.

At any rate, we never got around to discussing price. I had no need to. No doubt in my mind that the guy was going to tell me that he had a real bargain for me. The problem I’m sure would be that his idea of a real bargain and mine would likely be miles apart. I’m sure that for one of my Social Security checks he could have put together a good security system.

Obviously, the question comes up, how do I eat? I have come accustom to that, you know. Who is going to pay the electric bill? If I don’t pay the water bill, they will turn it off and it will cost me a bundle to get it turned back on.

Okay, we aren’t that bad off. We might have even been able to pay for the security system. Still, I don’t see the point of it. There are dozens of places close by here that have systems as good or nearly as good for half the price. And, as I said, I’m more interested in finding places to save money than finding places to finding places to squander it. If I really want to throw my money away, I may as well buy a lotto ticket or go to one of the near by casinos. At least I can have have fun doing that, or at least that’s what all the TV ads say.

Let’s Take a Quick Look at the Difference

I didn’t see the whole press conference with Old Joe but I did hear a few parts. From what I heard, he didn’t do himself much damage. On the other hand, I didn’t see as he helped himself either. If he is going to hold on, he is going to need to a much better performance, and that is ignoring calling Trump his VP.

However the one thing I am concentrating on is that it took him about two weeks to prepare. On the other hand, if Trump were to hold a press conference, it would be the next day, if not the same day. Trump does not need a big team to prepare him asking practice questions. Old Joe needs a lot of practice, a big team and a lot of rest.

I don’t know about you, but I would not consider this a real “big boy” press conference. If it had been Trump, he would have had to field far more difficult questions and more of them.

One more quick note, the press would not have treated Trump nearly as well as Old Joe and Trump would have still looked far better.

Looks like quite a difference to me.

It Seems Every Other Year

I don’t know. Maybe my memory is just playing tricks with me. It just seems every other year Huston is being hit by bad weather. If it’s not a hurricane it’s something else. And then, of course, every time they get hit, Uncle Sam Reaches deep in his pocket to help them climb out of another disaster.

The area is subject to bad weather and it appears they do so little to plan for it. I’m no engineer, but I have noted that other places have done things to prevent so much damage. I mean people who live along rivers will generally build levees long enough to go around Houston two or three times. On the other hand, every time Houston gets hit by another storm, I see no evidence of anything they did since the last one to prevent flooding.

Has anyone checked into the possibility of building some kind of barrier even if it is nothing but dirt. My own personal opinion, those people in New Orleans aren’t too bright building part of their city below sea level, but they do make some success in holding back the tides in between floods.

This last storm that hit Houston was just a cat 1. I can’t imagine what might have happened if a cat 3 hit them. To be sure, nature does throw the unexpected storms at us. We, here in Desoto County have had our share and we even had our share of flooding. However, in between storms, we rebuild stronger and better. Each time, we do something so as we can manage the flood waters better.

One year, we were kind of pinned in to our home by a flood. That was a long time ago, maybe 40 years. Since then, the engineers have been busy. That year, the flooding came up to the end of our street. Since then, the water hasn’t gotten close. I would guess the engineers around here know what they are doing. More important, they are busy working on it. I see no evidence of anyone doing anything in Houston. It seems, each time the storms do more damage than the time before.

Can the weather still hit us. Sure. We can get hit by tornadoes. We have had a few close ones. Not much we can do about them. But if we could we would. It would seem, every time Houston gets hit, they just say, oh well. We Texans can handle it, while all the time they have a hand out to Uncle to help pay for the repairs.

Of course, I am sure there are those that ask, what can we do? I ask, what have you tried to do?

I am quick to note, Houston is not the only area always looking for rest of us to pay for their poor choice of a place to live. NY, NY has been hit by a few storms and I have been asking them why they do noting to prepare. Considering the high percentage of dems in the city, I would thing they would be doing something to brace themselves against the rising seas. As near as I can tell, they have done nothing since their last storm. It does make me wonder, how high do the oceans have to rise before there ocean water running down the the streets knee deep and into the subways. Has anyone even asked the question?

Who is the Dictator?

The dems and especially Old Joe keep trying to say that Trump is wanting to set up a dictatorship.

Let’s have a look at the history. Trump during all the time as president worked hard to decentralize power, from the feds to the states, not something a dictator would normally do.

On the other hand, Old Joe has done all he can to centralize power to the feds and, incidentally, the dems. It’s just the sort of thing dictators do. It is exactly what Stalin and Lenin did. It is exactly what Mao did.

Let’s look at it logically. It is difficult to assume a thrown when the leader keeps decentralizing authority.

You see the strangest things on Memphis streets, literally.

I guess it was 10 or 12 years ago. I can’t say for sure. I usually took Jackson to I-55 on the way home from work a little after midnight. Sometimes I took Union Ave and I did try other ways. This particular night, well I guess it was about two in the morning, I took Jackson and I was almost to I-55. For those unaware, this is not the greatest neighborhood in Memphis and, of course it was late or early, as you chose to call it.

My headlights picked up something and I couldn’t make it out. I slowed as I approached. My first thought was that it was a blanket. But no. It wasn’t a blanket. It was person, a woman, lying in the middle of the right lane. I know it is a strange place for a siesta.

I couldn’t tell if she was alive or dead. I pulled up short and looked around. I was wondering if someone was waiting for me to stop so they could jump me. I turned on the flashers and pulled out my cell phone. Who was that guy that invented cell phones. I don’t know, but I sure am glad he did.

I called 9-1-1 and explained the situation. I answered a couple of questions. I also said that I probably should stay there as someone might not see her and run over her.

After hanging up, the woman started moving around and she seemed under the influence of something. Well, that was kind of something obvious. I mean she was in the middle of the right lane of the street, just lying there. At first she didn’t even move when I first moved up there but after talking to the police she started moving and finally stood.

When she saw me there, she decided to go around to the passenger door and tried to open it. A few seconds later the officer arrived and he took over after he checked with me. He had the same guess as me… that she was likely very drunk, but it could have been some other drug too. It could have also been her sugar was low or high or something like that.

At any rate, I was glad to hand the problem over to the officer. I waved to him and wished him well.

Well, it’s usually the Memphis drivers you need to watch out for. In this case, It was the sleeper I had to watch for. With the lighting as it was there, with just a very short distraction, that woman could have died that night. For that matter, if I just went around her, someone else could have hit her.

However, I had long learned to stay on alert while going through there. They have a habit of crossing the road there without much notice. I was always afraid some kid would run out in front of me.

I often wonder what happened to the woman, or what her problem was. Even if it was alcohol, I had the suspicion it was something else too. I don’t guess I’ll ever know.

Don’t Point

I can remember, believe it or not, when I was 4, being told, “Don’t point. It’s not polite.”

Really, I am not writing this to brag about my memory. The thing is I was not much older when I was taught not to point a gun.

I have written before about gun safety and pointing guns. I should not have to repeat it. I should not have to say anything about it at all. Once a month, it should be repeated on TV. It cannot be repeated too much.

My three safety rules on guns:

  1. Assume all guns are loaded until proven otherwise
  2. Assume all guns are loaded, period.
  3. Do not point a gun at anyone you do not intend to shoot.

Since I posted those three rules last, I’ve added two more. First, make sure there is no one behind anyone you are aiming at. You might miss and hit the one beyond your target. Moreover, the bullet can go through you target and hit the one behind. Actually, it is something of an extension of rule 3. Finally, don’t shoot unless you are in danger. Do not shoot to protect someone else unless you are ready to go to prison for it. I guess it is sort of that way if you are in danger. You might still end up in jail but, at least you’ll still be alive.

It is a fact, if you shoot someone or if you shoot at someone and you can’t come up with a good reason, there is a good probability that you will go to jail.

As a side note: even if you are completely justified, it is something that will stay with you the rest of your life.

You might wonder why I brought up the subject. That actor is again saying it was an accident. He is pleading not-guilty because he didn’t pull the trigger. It doesn’t matter. He pointed the gun at the woman. Moreover, though he was told the gun was safe, he never checked it. (Rule 1)

I believe he should be convicted and go to prison. He’ll be lucky it will be just 18 months. Fact is, even if the gun never went off, he should still get a good hand slap for pointing the gun at the woman.

I did find it interesting that the defense attorney said that he was handed a prop gun. If I were the persecuting attorney, if appropriate, I would have objected. The gun he was handed was not a prop. it was a real gun with at least one real live bullet in it. The fact that it was used as a prop did not change that.

A Mere 73 Cents

Some might not believe it, but I remember putting 4 cent stamps on letters. I just found out that they are raising the price of a stamp a nickle. That is a penny more than my stamps when I was but a boy.

Now, after all this time, the stamp will be a mere 73 cents, almost three quarters. I’m not even going to try to figure the yearly percentage but I figure it is quite a bit. It does make me wonder if I should forget the whole stock market thing and invest in stamps. I wonder if that’s legal.

Now let’s see. For 100 stamps, that’s 73 dollars, right? Maybe. As I get older, I have more problems wtih math, especially the basic kind.
