I Thought It Was a Little Mistake

I forgot to tell the doctor that my wife was low on two of her medications. No big deal. We went back today, and he wrote the prescriptions for them. We then headed to Walgreens. As I was entering the store, I saw a well-displayed sign: their pharmacy was closed.

There ought to be a linguistic term for this peculiar incongruity—something akin to an oxymoron, but manifested through actions rather than language. Consider the irony: a pharmacy store chain store without a pharmacy seems as absurd as a McDonald’s with no burger inventory. The dissonance is palpable, a logical disconnect between expectation and reality.

I glanced down at my watch, a sudden urgency washing over me. While numerous Walgreens dotted the local landscape, only one remained open around the clock. Given her critical medication shortage, I knew I couldn’t risk waiting. The catch? This particular pharmacy was located in Memphis—a city I habitually steered clear of—yet tonight, it seemed to be our sole lifeline.

We embarked on our journey, my apprehension stemming not just from navigating Whitehaven, the Memphis neighborhood notorious for its frequent media appearances, but also from the anticipation of a prolonged wait at the sole open pharmacy—a scenario all too familiar from past experiences.

Navigating the congested highway, I felt the weight of my earlier error intensifying with each passing moment. The surrounding vehicles seemed poised to exploit my vulnerability, their drivers laser-focused on potential opportunities to alter my trajectory. In this unforgiving urban landscape, lane discipline had become a forgotten art, with each motorist operating as if turn signals and careful observation were mere suggestions rather than essential safety protocols.

My trip to the store was uneventful, a fact for which I am grateful. The wait time passed quickly, and during our browsing, one detail stood out dramatically: the heightened security measures. Compared to my usual Walgreens, this store seemed to take precautions more seriously, with numerous items securely locked away. Despite being less than 10 miles from the store I usually visit and crossing a state line, the difference in security protocols were striking, suggesting they might experience more significant theft challenges than my familiar shopping environment.

On the positive side, the folks at the store seemed friendlier and more professional than where I usually visit. Didn’t expect that.

Implications and Facts

Understanding implications is a nuanced communication skill that many adults struggle to grasp fully. While most people comprehend the technical aspects of language, the subtle art of implying meaning without direct statement often eludes them. An implication is essentially a sophisticated form of communication where the true message is conveyed indirectly, allowing the listener to infer the underlying meaning through context, tone, and subtle linguistic cues.

Carefully choosing words can help avoid legal repercussions while still conveying a critical message. By using nuanced language and strategic implications, one can suggest potential misconduct without directly stating an accusation that could lead to a defamation lawsuit.

In a concrete scenario drawn from actual events, if Democratic leaders were to allege that President Trump issued unlawful directives, they would potentially expose themselves to legal challenges. Historical precedent suggests that such accusations could prompt swift legal action from the accused.

The argument suggests that by emphasizing soldiers’ obligation to reject unlawful directives, critics indirectly insinuate potential misconduct without explicit accusation. The underlying implication appears to be an attempt to cast doubt through suggestive language, rather than presenting concrete evidence of an illegal order. Unable to substantiate specific wrongdoing, the critique relies on rhetorical innuendo to challenge the president’s orders.

It also has the side effects of doubting lawful orders. It is the apparent purpose of the implications.

Political opponents have repeatedly attempted to challenge the president’s authority without substantiating claims of misconduct. Despite extensive scrutiny, no concrete evidence of illegal actions has emerged. In fact, the lack of specific allegations may paradoxically reinforce the administration’s perceived legitimacy and resilience against unfounded criticism.

The Amazing Undo Function

As word processing software emerged for personal computers, developers introduced the revolutionary UNDO function, transforming how users interact with digital text. Now, with a simple keystroke, I can effortlessly correct any typing error, instantly erasing mistakes and maintaining the flow of my writing. This feature has become an indispensable tool for writers, editors, and professionals across various fields.

If only life were like that. Can you imagine if Trump could press a couple of pseudo buttons and Obama Care would go away? Another one of those sets of buttons, and the errors of Old Joe would be no more.

Even without that undo function, President Trump has made very large strides in undoing the fiasco of the open border. However, it will take decades to address many of the technical and emotional consequences. There is just no magic wand to wave that will make all the side problems generated, likely intentionally.

Of all that was done by Old Joe, the one that will be most difficult to reverse is the inflation. Think about it. If the prices all are lowered back, that would be deflationary. If through some means he managed to do it, it might even lead to a depression. In this case, the fix would be far worse than the problem.

The long-term solution is simple: provide good jobs by bringing exported jobs home, offer good, inexpensive energy sources, and stop giving jobs to those who do not belong here.

There are other tasks that need to be addressed as well. However, in every respect and at every point, the Democrats are doing all they can to obstruct progress. They are attempting to prevent low-cost fuel. They do everything possible to hinder the deportation of illegal immigrants. And, by the way, they are doing all they can to keep criminals lose on the streets. This certainly does not help the economy.

To be sure, any country that spends more than it receives in revenue will have inflation. It is the primary reason for inflation. It means somehow or some way, spending must be reduced. The best way to reduce spending, whether at home, in business, or in government, is to reduce waste. President Trump tried to do that. You remember the uproar that resulted? Yes. The Democrats didn’t like that either. Actually, there were a few Republicans who objected too. It would seem the desire for free money is bipartisan.

You want to decrease inflation, vote for decrease of waste.

Housing Shortage Solution

Deport thirty million illegal aliens and we gain housing for 30 millions Americans.

We wouldn’t have had the problem if Old Joe and his friends hadn’t let the illegal aliens invade our country to begin with.

The problem would not have been exacerbated if the Democrats had not let millions of acres and homes burn to the ground. Just ask those who had to leave their homes in the “high rent” area north of Los Angeles.

Almost seems as if it is by design. Right?

Frustrations of Aging

During my younger years, flexibility was my forte. An itch on my back was swiftly addressed with a quick, effortless reach. Back then, the concept of a specialized back scratcher seemed utterly unnecessary, a puzzling solution to a problem I could easily resolve on my own.

Now, I can still reach most of my back. There is, however, one small part I cannot reach. Wouldn’t you know, any time I have an itch on my back, it is always in that one little place.

Despite purchasing various back scratchers, I find that nothing quite matches the precise relief provided by my own fingers. The alternative tools offer only fleeting moments of comfort, falling short of truly satisfying the persistent itch.

Seeking relief from a persistent itch, I’ve contemplated mimicking the behavior of bears, using a sturdy tree as a natural scratching post. While the strategy seems promising, I remain hesitant to test it, wary of drawing unwanted attention in a public.

However, if I ever get so desperate, I am open to suggestions. Just which kinds of trees make the best scratching posts?

Gambling & Way Back When

I can’t remember precisely. I can only approximate it as it occurred near the time Bill Clinton began his campaign for president, in the early 1990s, perhaps a year or two earlier. Suddenly, a number of people decided we, here in DeSoto County, needed to have a casino or three.

The media’s sudden shift was unmistakable. News broadcasts and radio programs flooded the airwaves with glowing narratives about the potential casino development. Their enthusiastic messaging painted a picture of transformative benefits, promising enhanced educational infrastructure, improved roadways, and a tourism renaissance. While the specific architects behind this narrative remained unclear, the coordinated messaging was impossible to ignore.

In general, I could tell that those behind it all were from north of the state line. It immediately brought to question to me, why don’t they stop trying to run our county? What business is it of theirs whether we have or don’t have casinos.

A grassroots resistance swiftly emerged, primarily mobilized through religious institutions. While avoiding direct electoral guidance, these groups plainly conveyed the potential consequences of their ideological stance.

In the contentious debate over casino development, local churches warned that out-of-state businesses would exploit local economic potential, siphoning profits away from the economy. Casino proponents initially promised local investment and economic revitalization. However, the churches’ predictions proved prophetic. Tunica County permitted it and today, every casino in the county is owned by eway outside corporate interests, rendering the original assurances hollow and leaving the local economy largely unbenefited by the gambling industry’s presence.

In a resounding display of community resolve, Desoto County residents decisively rejected the proposed initiative, voting against it down twice with overwhelming majorities. Faced with such resounding opposition, the proponents ultimately redirected their efforts south to Tunica.

Over the years, the expansive business venture appeared to flourish, with grand casinos emerging and thriving, until recent challenges began to surface and test their previous success.

The other day, I heard that one of the casinos is closing its doors and the rest are having problems. There are not nearly the TV ads from Tunica casinos. My best guess is that the gambling crowd has decided to go to the casino in West Memphis, Arkansas, which is closer. If the pattern continues, the city of Tunica will be smaller than when it first started.

There is one advantage for me and the folks here in DeSoto County. We don’t have to put up with Memphis drivers as much. They’ll be crossing the bridges across the Mississippi instead.

Something New

At 78 years old, I’ve been a devoted Christian since my early teens. Despite decades of church attendance, I continue to be humbled by new revelations. Surprisingly, I still encounter profound insights that are remarkably simple—revelations I should have grasped long ago, yet they continue to surprise and enlighten me.

Despite owning multiple Bibles throughout my life, the core text has remained remarkably consistent. I’ve read three different versions completely, cycling through them eight times in total. One might assume such extensive reading would render the scripture entirely familiar. Yet, surprisingly, just hours ago, I discovered a fresh theological insight that had previously escaped my understanding.

Even more surprising, it is based on a parable I must have heard a hundred times. Okay, let’s say ninety-nine. Actually, that too is an exaggeration. Nonetheless, I am so familiar with it that I can almost quote it from memory.

Nestled within Matthew 20:1-16, this compelling parable offers profound insights into divine generosity and fairness. The narrative centers on a vineyard owner who hires laborers throughout the day, yet remarkably compensates each worker equally with a full day’s wage of one denarius, regardless of the hours worked. This powerful story invites readers to explore deeper themes of grace, equity, and unexpected compassion beyond conventional economic expectations. I would hope you would read the parable, especially if you are not familiar with it. I must admit, I was among those that was confused by the parable the first dozen times I heard and read it. It does seem a bit unfair. However, Jesus does not promise us fairness. If he treated us fairly, we would all end up in Hell. What he offers is mercy for those willing to accept his forgiveness.

Now, let me digress to some of my own experience before explaining my recent revelation. When I went into the Marines, the most common advice I got from veterans was, “Keep your nose clean and do as you’re told, and the stripes will come along on their own.”

Though I thought little of it at the time, I did find it to be true. In spite of mistakes I made along the way, I did sew on my my sergeant strips before the end of my first four years. Also, I found it also worked well in the civilian world as well.

Throughout my career, several personal choices set me apart from my colleagues. My abstinence from alcohol meant I rarely attended social gatherings where drinks were served. I maintained a principled stance against contributing to United Way and I never had an interest in golf. I’ll let you determine which of these choices was most significant, but I am sure sure golfing would have had real advantages.

Now, have you ever pondered the divine principles of advancement? Until recently, such a contemplation had never crossed my mind. It never seemed that important.

I recognize my inherent limitations in measuring up to divine standards. What criteria does God use when selecting and determining an individual’s purpose and path?

It almost seems that Jesus chose his disciples randomly. If you stop and ponder it for a moment, you know that isn’t true. He knew each of the disciples before forming the earth, and He knew exactly where to locate each one.

In the realm of leadership, the vineyard owner faces the critical task of selecting and empowering capable leaders. Unlike human leaders, God possesses an unparalleled advantage, with omniscient insight into the potential and limitations of those He chooses. His divine perspective allows Him to anticipate success and failure with absolute certainty, rendering human attempts to impress or surprise Him through leadership prowess ultimately futile. This supreme understanding ensures that no individual can exceed or fall short of His expectations.

And here it is, folks. Playing golf or rubbing shoulders will get you nothing in God’s kingdom. He will place everyone where he wants them. In the end, they will accomplish exactly what God expects from them. He will always know the best person for the job. There will be absolutely no room for pride or boasting.

Will there be rewards. I think so but I can’t say for sure. It’s just one of those things I can’t figure out. One day, soon, I’ll know.

The important thing is, God will be there. Without God, there is no life, there is no light, there is no love. And when it is forever, there is no hope.

Total Panic

Fear came over us. We had just arrived home. My wife and I had left the car, and I was about to help her into the house.

Then, she said she couldn’t walk. For the next four minutes, I didn’t have a clue what the problem was and I certainly didn’t know what to do. Finally, the puzzle was solved and resolved. I opened the door which freed her jacket.

You will be happy to know we then proceeded to the house, a short walk away.

We had a laugh. Then, finally, I was able to take the groceries inside. Afterward, I sat down to rest for a while. Then there was a pounding at the front door. To my surprise, two policemen were there. It seems I had left the door open, which was noted by a neighbor.

It was all just part of a day full of surprises, quite a few of them.

Mixed Emotions

My contemplation of this matter has led me to a profound ethical crossroads. The consumption of meat is not merely a dietary choice, but a complex moral transaction where sentient creatures die to sustain human existence. Each hamburger and hotdog represents more than a meal—it embodies a silent, often overlooked narrative of animal mortality that we too readily dismiss without reflection.

In an ideal world, I long for a way to enjoy the rich, savory flavor of steak without the necessity of an animal’s life being sacrificed. Our contemporary lifestyle has distanced us from the direct process of obtaining meat, with industrialized food systems handling every stage from raising to slaughtering livestock. We are far removed from the primal act of hunting and preparing our own food, instead receiving neatly packaged proteins that often end up discarded, rendering the animal’s ultimate sacrifice meaningless. This disconnection raises profound questions about our relationship with food, consumption, and the ethical implications of our dietary choices.

For sure, even those of us who do eat meat, we should endeavor to make sure that not one ounce of meat be wasted. However, when we live in a land of plenty, it’s just so easy for us to kill a hundred animals when we only need eighty.

Throughout biblical history, the consumption of meat is not merely permissible but divinely sanctioned. The Passover narrative demonstrates God’s explicit instructions regarding both the selection and preparation of meat. Moreover, Jesus Christ himself participated in meat consumption and even prepared fish for his disciples, exemplifying the acceptability of this dietary practice. Given these scriptural precedents, it would be totally wrong to challenge or critique such established traditions of sustenance.

Every morsel of meat deserves respect, and we must strive to minimize waste in our culinary practices. Despite my own past shortcomings in this regard, I am committed to improving and encouraging mindful consumption.

Even more, we should all be mindful to take a moment or two to tell God how grateful we are for the meat and the vegetables as well. While we’re at it, we should also be thankful for our shelter and clothing too. It’s all so easy to forget the things provided to us by God.

In the midst of life’s complexities, we often neglect God’s most profound gift: salvation. The Passover lamb, sacrificed as a symbolic precursor to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice, reveals a depth of love that transcends human comprehension. While the death of an animal carries weight, Christ’s voluntary surrender of life for humanity’s redemption is infinitely more profound. Tragically, many remain unaware or indifferent to this transformative act of divine grace, overlooking the most significant offering of love in human history.

Yes, I feel bad that animals must die for my life. But how much more, how bad I feel to know that that the creator of all gave up his life, that I might have eternal life. So very much, I wish that was not a requirement for salvation. However, I don’t believe he would have laid his life down for me if their was another way.

When we get to heaven, as near as I can tell, we won’t eat meat; only fruits and vegetables. Animals won’t need to die to provide life for me.

Right now, yes, I eat meat. However, one day, I won’t. I’ll have no need or desire for it.

What are your feelings about eating meat?

Men and Women Are Different.

It has now been officially established. No more arguments permitted. They are now making women test dummies. It has now been established that women have different injuries in car accidents.

Guess that proves it, right? It appears the dummies will provide some additional factual indisputable evidence.
